Sam Abbott, Pitching Coach and English Teacher at Toledo, Ohio's Ottawa Hills High School, joins The Layback Podcast to discuss pitching/player development, staff management, dynamic programming, coaching/tech trickle down, and navigating the life of a high school, especially small school, athlete. Abbott stresses the importances of identifying the needs of individuals and how they can differ drastically from person to person. According to Abbott, coaching at the high school level, lends itself to a greater emphasis on overall personal development as opposed to athletic development at times. Abbott also highlights how identity statements assist pitchers in goal setting and as a checks and balances system throughout a season or career.
