These funds — pitched as a sort of Rip van Winkle investment that you can set and forget until you wake up retired — now account for one-third of the assets in all 401(k) and other defined contribution plans run by Vanguard.

The city mandated that all the rental e-scooters must cease operations by Monday while the companies behind them apply for permits.

Boosting plans to deploy self-driving cars next year, the SoftBank Vision Fund will invest $2.25 billion in General Motor’s Cruise unit, and General Motors will invest $1.1 billion, the companies said early Thursday at a press conference in Detroit. The state Senate on Wednesday passed a bill to create a state-chartered bank for California cannabis businesses, which would allow licensed merchants to write checks to pay taxes, fees and vendors — rather than use large amounts of cash, as they currently do. San Francisco won’t issue any more permits for dockless e-bikes until summer 2019 at the earliest. Only Jump Bikes, which was recently acquired by Uber , has permission to offer dockless e-bikes in the city , under an 18-month trial program.
