The Lord of glory rose from the dead by Himself on Sunday of the Resurrection, after He died on Friday, the Friday of the Crucifixion, on the wood of the Holy Cross. He rose for us, just as He died for us, so that we may obtain the blessings of the resurrection and the strength to defeat sin. For by the death of Christ we put away our old self and buried it with Christ, and by His resurrection from the dead, we clothed ourselves with the new man, which has the power to live with Christ once more. The hymns of the Feast of the Resurrection reflect the joy of the Church for the resurrection of the Lord of glory from among the dead, for the Divine Liturgy is prayed in a joyful tune, and the rite witnesses the joy of the Church because it received the blessings of the Resurrection

On Great and Holy Friday the Orthodox Church commemorates the death of Christ on the Cross. This is the culmination of the observance of His Passion by which our Lord suffered and died for our sins. This commemoration begins on Thursday evening with the Matins of Holy Friday and concludes with a Vespers on Friday afternoon that observes the unnailing of Christ from the Cross and the placement of His body in the tomb.

Today is the seventh Sunday in the Great Lent and is known as Hosanna Sunday or Palm Sunday.

The word Hosanna is Greek and is derived from the Hebrew word Ho-sha-a-nan which means Save us. It is the word that the Jewish multitude said in welcoming Our Lord Jesus Christ as King during His entry to Jerusalem.

The word Palm came from the way the multitude welcomed Our Lord by using palm and olive branches. From here came the naming of this Sunday as Palm Sunday.

Palm Sunday in the Coptic Orthodox Church has a special rite. During the offering of the morning incense, a procession inside the church consisting of the Holy cross,candles, palm and olive branches, flowers, incense, and the icon of the entry of Our Lord to Jerusalem is made. Twelve readings from the Holy Gospel are read at different locations in the church. Before each reading, the father priest says theprayer of the Holy Gospel. All these do not occur during regular Sundays....
