In this episode of Sanctuary Peacemakers, I’m joined by Eric Robinson—a former FBI agent, SWAT operator, firearms instructor, and pastor—who brings a rare and valuable perspective on church safety.
Eric recently retired from the FBI after 24 years as a special agent, where he worked cases ranging from counterterrorism to crimes against children. Before that, he spent over a decade in Christian ministry, including serving as a pastor. That combination of experience in both ministry and federal law enforcement provides a unique lens on the realities churches face today.
In this conversation, we discuss how churches should think about safety and preparedness in practical terms—not just in response to worst-case scenarios, but in everyday situations that are far more likely to occur. Eric explains how planning ahead—much like in SWAT operations—can prevent the need for split-second decision-making during a crisis.
We also cover:
The most common situations churches are likely to face (beyond mass shootings)
Warning signs that often appear before incidents escalate
How frameworks like Run, Hide, Fight (ALERRT) apply in a church setting
The differences between ALERRT and ALICE training
Why internal investigations in churches sometimes fail—and how that can be addressed
One practical step church leaders can take right now to improve preparedness
This conversation is not about fear—it’s about awareness, responsibility, and being better equipped to protect those we serve.
