Sand Winning Formby Sand was a valuable mineral used in Industry during the 1900s Dr Phil Smith

Listen Later

"Sand-winning: Memories of sand-winning (or sand-mining) on the Sefton Coast are fading but it was a major industry for about 60 years. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes were taken from the sand-dunes and beaches, ending in 1970. In places, coastal defences were weakened, this being one of the reasons why it stopped.
The sand was used for casting in metal foundries, for glass-making and even for filling sand-bags in Liverpool at the start of World War II. The remains of enormous sand-quarries can still be seen if you know where to look." Formby Podcast would like to thank Dr Phil Smith for sharing his story. If you have a question or a story.
