Tonight is the final episode of Season 2 and we are going to be tasting 2019 Marani Akhasheni Saperavi from the Republic of Georgia in what was known as the Soviet Union. Saperavi is a late harvest grape so it is a semi-sweet red wine.
Here is a fun fact, Georgia has over 500 identifiable indigenous grapes varieties. Can you believe that? I could do multiple seasons of this podcast just covering indigenous grapes from this one country alone and they have been producing wine for over 8,000 years. How cool is that?
Saperavi is also another teinturier grape, which means the flesh on the inside is colored as well as the outside. Most grapes either red or white have white flesh inside the grapes. This wine boasts a beautiful purple hue with a hint of red, has high tannins and really high acidity once you swirl it around in your mouth. It is full of black fruits like plum and currants and has cigars and cinnamon wrapped in there as well. it is a very full wine with a wonderful mouthfeel that seems like it will never leave your mouth wanting for more.
Saperavi would pair wonderfully with any style of Pizza or Pasta but, could also be served with dessert. With an 11% alc. content, you will be feeling fine with a glass or two. At a $13 price point, it is a win-win. If you would like to partner with me on Mo Wine bringing you really cool wines to drink from all around the world, go to Buy me a Coffee or a Glass of Wine.
See you next time for Season 3.
