hello everybody welcome to our um target practice exercises um by rick mooney these are great little exercises you don't need the music um i'm going to split these exercises into little tiny classes and i want you to try and memorize them and come back to them whenever you feel you need a bit of target practice okay so what we're doing here is we're going to play two open d's minims and then we're going to play the d in on the a string next to it and get the right note you can adjust you see i adjusted there so two of those you can move your fingers slightly to make sure you get the right note okay so it's just again now when you're doing target practice it's important to use that bone in your finger um so that it's quite small don't don't use a flat finger because it's not what we're doing is we're we're really being meticulous about this so we want the exact note as near as possible so let's do that again and now we're going to do it again but this time instead of using our fourth we're going to use our second on that d on the a string so open open

okay so open open 4-4 open open 2-2 it's tricky okay now i keep my thumb i don't move my whole hand down i do a bit of a stretch and then move my hand down but if it's easier go to the four

open open and then shift

now it's entirely uh dependent on how you play but you need to learn to shift or stretch one or the other

fourth finger open open

a combination of stretching and um shifting whatever it is you need to get there okay so your aim is that d and that is our target practice for today come back tomorrow we'll do one a day and we'll work through uh this this book it's very exciting i love target practice and what you'll find is it really improves your playing all round

hi cellists welcome to royal clarence the music studio um we're going to start uh the suzuki book today and um let's just cover a few things i hope you're in tune i will play my notes a string

d string

g string

and the deep blue sea

um if you're not in tune stop this broadcast and you can get an app i use um a just a phone app it's got some ads on it but it's fine i'll put the link in the description for you and on the website um yeah i mean you you really you'll really benefit from having an app it's so easy and if you're probably listening on a phone anyway to this so in the background i have my string section from one of my robots um vapour punk and they are playing d major and it's uh you'll start hearing these around i noticed they're using these on a lot of cheap tv programs they you know this is an automated thing on garageband i can't believe people are actually using them um as as background music for for programming it's absurd i mean it's ridiculously repetitive but it's very useful for us because it it tells us a key and the key we're working with today is d we're not going to be using our left hand yet we're just using our bow and our right hand okay now let's just check that you've got your feet on the ground that you've been fed and watered and that you're letting all the stress go don't bring stress to the music room because it will affect your playing and that's disappointing so a few deep breaths

oh that's better already now i want you to use the bow about halfway up you don't have to be exact like maybe slightly nearer uh the frog because we're going to be doing this

now the music as you can see it's all the same note this note that you see before you the middle one on the stave that we tend to use for cello mostly it's called the bass clef is a d string and we know d string d string is the third one along from our ear a lovely d string and the whole of this book uh really centers around d major

so if you can blame me that just a couple of and look in your mirror and check that you've got a lovely straight bow and keep that elbow nice and high because when you've got your elbow high what you're doing is you're playing from your back and playing from your back is going to give you such a pretty tone

so hardly any pressure weight from your hand no pressure just the weight of the of the frog and gravity and what you're doing is you're guiding the bow you're not pushing in you're guiding you're a gentle pull and a gentle push very very gentle and it really just comes from your forefinger and that is it

okay now experiment until you get a pretty sound you're not going to be really pretty straight away it's the nature of the beast it will take you about six years to be beautiful when you play a cello note okay now let's have a look i didn't mean to put you off there by the way i'm supposed to be encouraging uh the the wonderful thing about suzuki is you can sound pretty good quite early on um suzuki uses a lot of repetition and a lot of mimicry and a lot of airplay so hopefully you've got the recordings if you haven't they're on youtube for this exercise um hopefully you've got the music too there are a lot of free places you can get it unfortunately i'm not allowed to play you the piece um on the recording because of copyright reasons but they're all over youtube so let me play the first bar

rest and rest now when you play this is four four beats to a bar so the first beat it's got four notes in it the second beat has two notes in it but they're played like that and the reason they're played by like that is because they've got a dot above them which means uh to for our purposes cut the...

hello gorgeous cellists from all around the world welcome to royal clarence and class two we're starting from scratch darlings which is a good place to start and today we're going to um look at how we hold the boat look it's very very difficult to hold bow and explain it to you but i'm going to do my best i'm going to recommend though that you if you can if you have access to youtube that you pop along and watch as many different videos as possible perhaps you can even look at famous uh cellists and try and get a good picture of their hand and sometimes it's a bit tricky they go quite fast and the camera tends to look at other things like the audience or the performer's face rather than how the performers holding the bow i find it's quite difficult to see um but there are lots of instructional uh videos about how to hold the bow now the way i see it the the thing is with the the right hand it isn't a crane okay it isn't lifting and pushing and shoving and dropping it's something much less cumbersome cumbersome oh something fell down there goodness me it's something much less cumbersome than a crane claw although it it sort of doesn't look dissimilar but it doesn't squeeze it doesn't push it doesn't shove what it does actually is it just guides it's almost as if if you let go the bow would just fall forward

but you're only really fighting gravity nothing else okay so you can do a little experiment if you put the bow as a cross remember i said a plus sign perpendicular to the string at all times and if you just clasp the frog end that's the heavy bit and put your fingers all around it without squeezing that pressure is the pressure that you're going to need to just hold it up

just enough to bring it backwards and forwards at all times and sometimes we use our wrist and sometimes we use our forearm and sometimes we use our shoulder and our back and it really depends on all sorts of things not least the way that you perform but the greatest performers have passed on their knowledge to us to us and that's what i'll be sharing with you over the coming weeks so a little exercise let's pop our little hand over the frog with our thumb tucked in that little u-shape barely holding it so droppable almost pop the use your left hand as well to hold it straight now there's a thing you can do where you put a loo roll uh through the end and this uh and you pass it through the loo roll uh to keep it dead straight i mean that's a drama the best way to do it is to look in a mirror and i have a mirror here in front of me at all times and it's not because i think i'm beautiful although i do actually but it's also so that i can feel that uh i've i have an audience so when i do have an audience it doesn't throw me but also i can make sure at all times my bow is straight and sometimes if i'm a bit restricted space wise my brain compensates by tilting my bow up and i miss something that's years of experience of balance um trickery it's fooling you you you're compensating we don't need to but this is another reason why it's always really important actually to have loads of room cellists are big giant orbs of uh movement we're not a triangle or a rectangle where a complete circle if you stretch both your hands out now that is where if you put your bow in the tip let's do it on the g string and take it right to the other side it's coming out you know as long as your arm is do you see this is the sphere of space and energy that a cellist requires it's quite phenomenal and then upward we've got our head and perhaps a hat if we're wearing one and downward we have the ground so do you see we're using up all of this huge three-dimensional orb um i guess remembering that and keeping that in mind will help you when you perform don't restrict yourself fill your orb fill your space believe in your space believe have confidence make a noise make space fill the orb of hope that will make you a wonderful cellist so today we are just going to...

Long Long Ago Cello Suzuki Bk 2 Free Class With Sarnia How to Play Cello Music School Audiobook

hi everybody welcome to long long ago by t.h bailey now this is the first piece that we're looking at today from suzuki book one i'm going to break it down into little sections and if you want to hear the whole thing please go to one of the other broadcasts i'm not going to play it right through now this is really for absolute beginners um not of beginners of cello i'm expecting that you can read music i'm expecting that you've listened over and over and over again to the um the piece how it should be played unto my previous introductory lessons okay so i'm expecting something but i'm not expecting you to have looked at this and played it in detail now the first rule make sure you're in tune

keep your back straight draw that tummy button in as if it's attached to your spine just a little bit tight i don't want any something um if you slump your turn will be affected i really noticed that if i'm trying to operate my recording devices or shuffling about or something um or i'm not dead straight or dead comfortable it affects my tone um and really you you need to work on that because if you want to um record at a later date you're going to need a beautiful tone and and you want it nice and steady so we're looking in the mirror in front of us i do hope you have a mirror in front of you and we are making sure that our bow is perpendicular okay to our string that's the the most important thing for tone as well because everything's important let's face it that's a problem with the cello everything matters so long long ago is in c major that's okay we can find the c here fiddle around you can hear that's not a c

sounds pretty spot on look i've got my fourth finger on the g string

and we've got um we're gonna hold that note for two so don't be tempted to uh shorten it

but hold it now let's pop on our backing track because this is going to make sure that you keep in tune okay i want you to play this a backing track i use garageband but you can use whatever you can use a drone and whatever you can get up at the time so

now we're going to play that quite loudly because if you look ahead we're go we have to get quieter now it's a bit difficult on the recorder to get the right volumes but hopefully um

and get ready this last this fourth bar you've got to really bring it down

let's do this a few times

so you've got a string crossing and a volume change tricky i huh you can hear that um next bit uh what we've got

same

a little bit different um no i think it's the same yeah same so nothing nothing going on but do it keep doing it even if it's exactly the same i want you to do it um let's have a look what's next that's nice

and then we've got the big string crossing we've sound

yeah i think they're really important notes let's give them some personality um dumb dumb uh those two notes are a launch pad aren't they they really are a launchpad now it's an open note

so uh it shouldn't be too tricky but of course if you're out of tune it you're going to be completely out if these are out so if you did a bit sharp

it would be all wrong so you need

and you've got a another big string crossing there that's a bit flat sorry about that um loud it's loud

but you can't be too quiet on this g because you've got to be even quieter on this c it's difficult uh with my backing track for you to hear that give yourself some somewhere to go some space okay next bit um

it doesn't say that you should slur down but as you come to the end of a piece you would always naturally just slow it down a bit to get the audience calm after your um your fantastic performance which sent them into a frenzy of ecstasy so there we go that was long long ago um i've got this uh i've got...

hey journalists welcome to christmas yep we're going to work through our book of christmas carols now the book i'm using is let me find the title cherry time christmas uh oxford press um however i'm going to call out the notes and i'll play each little section for you and you can therefore learn it by memory okay um i can't just play it and play the whole thing unfortunately for copyright reasons but i'm allowed to teach it which is pretty good news isn't it so we're going to start let's have a look i mean i can call out some chords as well for pianists and guitarists now you'll hear in the background i've got one of my robots playing this is cuddles playing guitar so um we'll just keep cuddles going because cuddles just keeps us in tune doesn't it so i shouldn't call it in it but um sometimes i forget it's just a robot anyway open g so we're starting on the although we're in c major we're starting on the fifth so we're starting on that lovely open g and then we're going straight in to two c's

and another so that's an open and two fourth fingers down put all four fingers down

and then a quick b which is three and then another four so for that bar we'd be open four four three four into the next bar and then string swap i've got a nice slur there should i do that again

good and now four fingers down on the d string

so let me explain the fingering from that third bar

four fingers down

two up two down and then one open one we're going to hold that for two for that minute okay should i do that whole section again

bravo now we've got a repeat of all of those sections not quite so next bar open four four three four one one open four down open open three three one open

do you see i will do the second section

okay i think you should should i play it from the beginning and call out the notes some sometimes it for different musicians do different things some musicians like to hear what the notes sound like others like to know the names if you're writing this down it's or you've got a score in front of you it's going to be really useful to know the names of the notes so g c c b c e g

e

okay um sometimes i have trouble going backwards next section g's with your fourth finger down three of them and then just nip across onto that other string with your fourth finger down um i wouldn't move your whole hand i just move the pinky because the next note is second finger down

and then we repeat that little phrase

that's four four four four two one one open so i'll call out the notes for that little section uh g uh

and we're going to swap the strings and go up two three eight open string don't have to worry about it don't squeak like i did there then back down on four so what i do is from that section don't move your hand away from the d string keep it covered because there's a string we don't need any fingers for so if your fingers are already on this other string ready you see so keep your fingers down on that other string if you can you've got fingers don't so let me just uh call out the names of the notes

g now this is that's a bit tricky just because of the rhythm see the rhythm is tricky now i've played a few times...
