This month we had the privilege of getting to know author and activist, Kelly Catlin. Kelly is the author of Kurt Cobain: Forever in Bloom, a charity-driven book that explores Kurt Cobain's legacy through interviews, research, and a focus on empathy, mental health, and advocacy.
"In 2017, a month after my wedding, I lost my family member, Walter, a 33 year old Veteran Marine, to suicide. He was a lifelong Nirvana fan. I wrote this book to try and process that loss, and to hopefully remove the romanticism surrounding one of the most well-documented suicides of the 20th century. It's why I don't keep a penny from the book. Everything I do is to hopefully encourage open, honest discussions about mental health in honor of two amazing men. I never learned about Kurt, the musician, but Kurt, my friend's friend. It was an incredible experience, and one I don't take for granted.
It's not a standard bio but a bio/memoir. In my book, Kurt is a lens to discuss larger, systemic issues and what we can do to help those who suffer in plain sight. Just a little context for the project and why the book exists. I wish I never had to write it, but I hope it can help someone. The back of the book is all mental health resources and hotlines to contact/free resources for those in need."
There will be a regional book tour this fall when the book comes back out, and she'll be touring with a NJ-based band that focuses on inclusivity and positivity. The events double as food drives, so the goal is to really take the book and use it to help the community as a whole. Some organizations supported include mental health, suicide awareness, children's advocacy, animal rescue, and local food banks.
