Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Malique Javon Fails, 18, of Highland Park, in connection with the homicide of Christina Hayes, 28, of Taylor, a transgender woman of color. On June 21, 2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a laundromat in the 17600 block of Woodward Avenue for a reported dead person observed. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim in the alley behind the building, deceased, suffering from injuries to her face and neck. It is alleged that on June 21, 2025, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Defendant Fails fatally assaulted Ms. Hayes and robbed the victim of her money and cellphone, before fleeing the scene. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on August 15, 2025. More specific facts and evidence will be placed on the record in court at the preliminary examination. Malique Javon Fails has been charged with Felony Murder, Larceny from the Person, and Hate Crime – Gender Identity Bias.*

Dr. James Dobson, who founded the conservative Christian ministry Focus on the Family and was a politically influential campaigner against bodily autonomy and LGBTQ+ rights has died. He was 89. Born in 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dobson was a child psychologist who launched a radio show to counsel Christians on parenting and started Focus on the Family in 1977. Alongside fundamentalist giants like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, he became a force in the 1980s for pushing conservative Christian ideals in mainstream American politics. James Dobson was a controversial figure who wrote over 70 books. He has been criticized for promoting the abuse of children and small animals in his 1978 book, The Strong-Willed Child. The book describes an incident where he beat a puppy with a belt to teach them obedience. Dobson uses it as an analogy for how "good" parents should use corporal punishment to discipline their children. He was also a strong advocate for conversion therapy, a pseudoscientific practice which aims at forcibly changing the sexual orientation or gender identity of LGBTQ+ children.

Ten years after the Supreme Court extended marriage rights to same-sex couples nationwide, the justices this fall will consider for the first time whether to take up a case that explicitly asks them to overturn that decision. Kim Davis, the former Kentucky county clerk who was jailed for six days in 2015 after refusing to issue marriage licenses to a gay couple on religious grounds, is appealing a $100,000 jury verdict for emotional damages plus $260,000 for attorneys fees. In a petition for writ of certiorari filed last month, Davis argues First Amendment protection for free exercise of religion immunizes her from personal liability for the denial of marriage licenses. More fundamentally, she claims the high court's decision in Obergefell v Hodges -- extending marriage rights for same-sex couples under the 14th Amendment's due process protections -- was "egregiously wrong."

An 18-year-old Minnesota woman says a trip to Buffalo Wild Wings turned into a humiliating experience when she was accused of being a man in the women’s restroom. Gerika Mudra, an 18-year-old high schooler, went out to eat with a friend at a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Owatonna in April. She says when she went to use the restroom, a server followed her inside and confronted her, demanding she prove she’s a woman. “She had come in yelling, saying, ‘This is a woman’s restroom. The man has to get out,’” Mudra said. “I stood there shocked. I was so confused… I didn’t know what to do.” Mudra says the server blocked her from leaving the restroom until the 18-year-old unzipped her hoodie to show she had breasts. Multiple Oklahoma lawmakers and a board member are responding to allegations involving State Superintendent Ryan Walters following Thursday’s State Board of Education meeting. Two publications, including NonDoc, report that board members, Becky Carson and Ryan Deatherage, say that a video featuring naked women was displayed on a TV in Walters’ office during the meeting. Carson and Deatherage said they were the only ones seated in a position where they could see the screen.

Actor Johnathan Joss was fatally shot outside the remnants of his burned home. His husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, believes it's a hate crime. Joss was best known as the voice of John Redcorn on "King of the Hill." Police say he was killed last week near his home on the city's South Side. Police arrested his neighbor, Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez for his death. Investigators say the two had a long-standing feud over property rights, that ended in Joss' death on June 1.
