Srimad Bhaagwat - Skandh 1 (Part 12)
In this concluding episode of Srimad Bhaagwat – Skandh 1, we witness the final earthly journey of the Pandavas, a moving account of renunciation, righteousness, and ultimate liberation. Having fulfilled their divine mission and realizing that Kali Yuga has begun with the departure of Bhagwan Shri Krishna, King Yudhishthira entrusts the kingdom to King Parikshit. Renouncing all royal comforts, he, along with Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva, and Draupadi, embarks on the sacred Mahaprasthana—the Great Journey toward the Himalayas in pursuit of the Supreme.
As they ascend the difficult mountain path, a mysterious dog begins to accompany them with unwavering loyalty. Along the way, Draupadi and each of the four Pandava brothers fall one after another. Yudhishthira compassionately explains that although each of them was virtuous, subtle traces of attachment, pride, or personal weakness still remained. These incidents remind us that even the noblest souls must transcend the finest forms of ego before attaining the highest spiritual state.
Yudhishthira alone continues the journey, steadfast in truth, dharma, and detachment, accompanied only by the faithful dog. Upon reaching the gates of heaven, Indra invites him to ascend but asks him to abandon the dog. Refusing to forsake a loyal companion who had remained with him until the very end, Yudhishthira chooses compassion over personal reward. At that moment, the dog reveals himself to be Dharma Dev, the very deity of righteousness and Yudhishthira's divine father, who had come to test his unwavering commitment to dharma.
Having passed the ultimate test of integrity, compassion, and selflessness, Yudhishthira enters heaven in his mortal body, becoming a timeless symbol of righteousness and ideal conduct.
Presented in easy-to-understand Hindi, this episode concludes Skandh 1 by reminding us that true success in life is measured not by power, wealth, or achievement, but by unwavering adherence to dharma, compassion toward all beings, and complete surrender to Bhagwan. It beautifully teaches that those who remain steadfast in truth and righteousness ultimately attain the highest spiritual destination.
