You made it!  We are at the final episode of our Mecha March Madness month with special guest - Dr. Shannon Davies Mancus!  We are bringing out the big guns in our finale with Code Geass and Zoids Genesis!  Code Geass is an alternate history anime that has a splash of the Carolingian age mixed with (not so subtle) references to Orwell's 1984.  Zoids Genesis is the same dopey Zoids show that you've come to know and love! Bond. James Bond...had a kid. Let's all be very clear.  You heard us!  We're all lying to James Bond Jr to allow James Bond to avoid paying child support.  This is crazy.  We're 99.99% sure that you can't have an "junior" suffix for a name if it's NOT a direct child, right?  We're now very confused but not as confused as a weird smattering of people that are enrolled at the Warfield Academy. Relatives of Q, Felix Leiter, and the actual Buddy Mitchell; this cast of characters is insane.  The villains are even more crazed because it's a combination of Captain Planet villains and the villains from Bond movies.

This cartoon starts with a lie.  Not just a lie to one or two people but a lie to the entire world except for a handful of military personnel.  The US government has been lying to us about the BIG GUY.  That's right.  He's not a huge robot but rather, it's a robot suit that is worn by a pilot.  A human, honest to goodness, flesh and blood human being, who is tasked with the awesome responsibility of protecting the world.  The nerve!  The treachery!  The idea of decommissioning the Big Guy?  What happens when you scrape one military defense program for another that is...a little too childish, perhaps?  We find out what happens when the Big Guy teams up with Rusty the boy robot for one hell of a patriotic ride.

GI Joe is a sacred cartoon in the ancient halls of the SMC podcast.  These General Infantry Soldiers are in the upper eschelon of cartoons that is reserved for animation that has defined our childhood.  We understand that reboots will happen and we look forward to seeing our beloved childhood nostalgia with a new coat of paint.  Or in this case - a new coat of paint, mecha suits, a castle rocket, and the world's WORST game of chess!  Oh, and spoiler - GI Joe becomes a terrorist organization?!  It's all very confusing.

This is a interesting week for us because we are two white men in our 30's watching a cartoon about teenage girls in high school.  How are we going to identify?  How are we going to understand the delicate nature and balance of all these emotional relationships?  To answer your question - we LOVED this show.  Seriously.  No sarcasm.  We really loved every moment of this show and how it handled navigating relationships in high school.  Both Sean and Dave are incredibly impressed by this show and its skill in portraying the nuance of relationships at this stage in life.
