Notre Dame is one of the biggest brands in college football — and somehow, its football team still doesn’t belong to a conference.
So how did that happen?
In this episode, we’re going back through the history of Notre Dame football: how the program built a national identity long before most schools did, why independence became part of its brand, and why joining a conference still hasn’t been necessary.
Because Notre Dame’s independence isn’t just a weird technicality. It’s the result of more than a century of college football history.
And the more you look at the history, the less weird Notre Dame’s independence starts to seem.
This week, I’m digging into one of the most inconsistent conversations in college football: when teams in the same conference keep beating each other, when do we call it chaos — and when do we call it depth?
We’re looking back at the absolute mess that was the ACC last season, comparing it to what’s happening in the SEC right now, and talking about preseason rankings, résumé strength, AP Poll volatility, and why conference reputation can sometimes shape the way we interpret the exact same result.
Plus, I’m introducing a new weekly project: The Blind 25 — my attempt to rank teams with no names, no narratives, just the résumé.
Why have some parts of the country dominated college football for decades while others have struggled to keep up?
In this episode, we’re zooming out from the weekly rankings and looking at the deeper history behind where college football power has traditionally lived — and why those advantages have lasted as long as they have.
From regional recruiting pipelines and conference strength to money, geography, tradition, and the ways the sport has evolved, this is less about declaring which region is “best” and more about understanding how the map of college football power got drawn in the first place.
And with NIL, the transfer portal, and conference realignment continuing to reshape the sport, that history gives us a lot more context for what’s changing now.
Four weeks into the college football season, we finally have enough evidence to start asking what we actually know.
In this State of the Season check-in, we’re looking at which preseason expectations are holding up, which teams are raising more questions, and which narratives may already need to be thrown in the trash.
From Texas looking wildly talented but wildly undisciplined, to Ole Miss getting a reality check in Gainesville, Clemson showing signs of improvement, LSU’s massive expectations and ongoing SEC drama, and growing concerns around South Carolina — there is a lot to unpack.
Plus, we talk about the Oregon–USC moment that overshadowed the game itself and why Week 4 felt like a reminder that talent alone doesn’t make a team complete.
Welcome to State of the Season: Week 4.
Indiana had already gone from college football afterthought to playoff team.
But in Part 2, the question gets bigger: could they actually finish the job?
We pick up where Part 1 left off and follow Indiana through the stretch that turned an incredible turnaround into something historic — the biggest tests, the defining moments, and the run that ended with a national championship.
Because at some point, the Cinderella story stopped being surprising and started becoming something much bigger.
By 2023, Indiana football was the losingest program in college football history.
Two years later, they’re national champions.
But that turnaround didn’t come out of nowhere. In Part 1, we’re going back to the beginning — from Curt Cignetti’s unlikely path to Bloomington and Fernando Mendoza’s journey to becoming Indiana’s quarterback, to the playoff controversy that followed their breakout season and the revisionist history that tends to shape how we remember teams and playoffs after the fact.
Because before Indiana could become college football’s ultimate Cinderella story, they first had to prove they belonged in the conversation at all.
If it seems like this weekend’s LSU–Ole Miss game is all anyone can talk about… there’s a good reason.
In today’s bonus episode, we’re breaking down the background behind all the drama surrounding this matchup — how we got here, why there’s so much tension between these two programs, and, of course, the man at the center of the whole thing: Lane Kiffin.
Because there is a LOT more going on here than just what happens on the field Saturday.

In 2023, Florida State went 13–0 and won their conference… and still was left out of the playoff. We break down what happened, why it happened, and why it still matters. Because in college football… winning isn’t always enough.
Wait… Why Is Stanford in the ACC?
Cal. Stanford. SMU. In the Atlantic Coast Conference?
If that sounds confusing… it’s because it is.
In this episode, we break down why conferences stopped being about geography, how TV money changed everything, how NIL and the transfer portal accelerated the chaos, and why college football feels completely different now.
College football is chaotic… but before you can understand the chaos, you have to understand how it actually works.
In this episode, we break down the basics — conferences, rankings, and the playoff — and why something as simple as “who’s the best team?” is way more complicated than it should be.
