The 2026 SBE National Meeting was held in Middleton, WI, during the Midwest Regional Broadcasters Clinic, jointly produced by the state broadcast associations of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Among the SBE events held was the annual SBE Membership Meeting and Awards Presentation on Sept. 16. The meeting was recorded and is featured in this month's SBE WEBxtra. The meeting featured the induction of officers and directors for the coming year, as well as recognition of the SBE award winners, including Robert W. Flanders SBE Engineer of the Year, the James C. Wulliman SBE Educator of the Year, and the SBE Technology Award. The SBE's newest Fellow was also recognized.
The SBE Mentor Program was created in 2016, making 2026 the 10th anniversary of the program. Since its start, the program has seen more than 100 participants as mentors and mentees. We talk to SBE Mentoring Committee Chair Pierre Jaspar about the program, from its beginnings to today, and we'll hear from some of the participants as well.

Forrest M. Mims III is our guest in this episode. You may recall the series of mini-notebooks he hand-lettered for Radio Shack that were published in the 1980s and 1990s. The series introduced many people to building electronic circuits, and Radio Shack sold more than 7 million of them. Mims wrote other books for Radio Shack and on electronics. His career as a scientist spans a range of technologies, which he discusses in his recent memoir, "Maverick Scientist."

The SBE is always staying on top of technology and the latest advances. There's constantly a new term being thrown about as technology advances, and the current term or phrase of the day is "artificial intelligence." We use AI in our daily lives already, whether we think about it or not, and it's making its way into audio, radio, video and TV operations more and more. This SBE WEBxtra has two guests who will share their views on AI in broadcast and media: Bob Caniglia, director of sales operations, Americas; Blackmagic Design, and Marty Sacks, EVP sales, marketing and strategy, Telos Alliance.

KCUR and KWJC Kansas City, both licensed to the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) provide NPR and classical music programming to Kansas City. The station occupied their studio space since the 1980s in a building built in 1949. Over the years, the building continued to face structural and mechanical problems. The stations were planning to move and looking for a new location when UMKC declared the building unfit for occupation. The stations were given 40 days to vacate. We talk to Chris Prewitt, director of technology and broadcast operations, about the process to find a temporary space and relocate on such a short schedule.

Attracting new talent into broadcasting, especially the technical side, has been an ongoing effort by the Society of Broadcast Engineers. Many colleges and high schools offer programs in broadcasting, and we visit one of those programs at Liberty High School in Missouri. Broadcast Advisor Jamie Munoz is our guest. She tells us about the program and the work the students are doing, including a daily news program, coverage of sports and other projects.
