If you look closely at lizards or fish you will notice that they have something that called scales that protect their bodies or protect them from predators. These are "pieces of hard skin on the outside of an animal's body." Many children have owned goldfish or have seen them in fish tanks. Their scales are easy to see. If you've ever gone fishing and caught a fish with scales you may be familiar with how they feel. Snakes and lizards, which are reptiles, also have scales. Most reptiles live in hot habitats or homes and "their scales keep them from drying out."
Scales have different textures. For example, if you look at the photographs of many animals in this book you'll notice that some are "thick and rough," some are soft, while others are "flat and smooth." Some scales are meant to protect the animal by being hard or spiky. It's difficult for another animal to injure another one when it cannot bite through its skin. Some scales make an animal difficult to spot and attack. The survival of many animals is dependent on their scales.
This is an excellent book in which children can explore the world of animal science and body coverings. As a beginning science book the print is large and unfamiliar words such as "scales" are printed in bold lettering and defined in the glossary. Each page has a large, clearly defined photograph that identifies the topic being discussed. For example, when the statement "Snakes shed their old skin and scales," there is a colorful photograph of a snake molting. In the back of the book is an index, a pictorial glossary, a section on how and why "snakes need to shed their old scales and skin (three photographs are included), and a two-page section about scale facts. This is one of five "Body Coverings" books in the First Step Nonfiction Series, a solid beginning nonfiction science series for the young student.
