Scarif Scuttlebutt Podcast

EP103 is a great discussion on the notion of some of our favorite characters and their 'savior complex'. Skywalker as the 'chosen one', Superman comes down from the heavens to save humanity, etc. These characters throughout our fandom always seem to have the power to save the world. What does that say about our own need and the concept of redemption and saving?

Join us as Ro and Josh from A Certain Point of View Podcast dive deep into the 'Savior Complex' in the heroes we love. We try to explain our own fixations with these types of heroes and compare them to real life exploring parallels to spirituality and religion.

We hope you'll join us on this one.

#ThatsTheScuttlebutt

We are joined on this episode by Abigail from The Manic Pixie Weirdo Podcast @MPWeirdoPodcast to talk about the role masks have in our lives. We enjoy the masks we see in our geek culture, Kylo Ren, Batman, Vader and so forth and for those characters we realize they represent the hidden selves of their particular characters. But what does it mean when we hide behind a mask? For some we wear these masks to feel braver or show a different side of us to others, etc. We'll explore how we use figurative masks in our daily lives.

Plus we have voicemails and tweet responses from our friends that we'll talk about as well. Enjoy this discussion about the masks we wear. If you have feedback on this, please give us a shout out on Twitter or email us at [email protected]

Thanks to Abigail for joining in on this discussion.

After a short break due to computer issues, the scuttlebutt is back. We asked DJ from Rogue1Radio to join us and talk about our favorite Star Wars Space battles and their significance in both behind the scenes and in universe. We dove into some special FX talk and really picked apart how these epic moments helped drive story through all the trilogies.

Join the discussion and make sure you subscribe to the show.

Tell us what YOUR favorite Star Wars space battle is and why!

We're taking with Toby Price about the controversy surrounding the children's book 'I Need A New Butt'. You've seen the headlines, now check out what the truth is straight from the source. Getting in hot water for what some say was inappropriate reading or an over reacting school board? You decide.

We also ask Toby what kind of nerd stuff he's currently enjoying and BONUS, Toby reads portions of the story to see just how we react to needing a new butt! You know how we like our butts around here, that's the scuttlebutt!

Welcome to our 100th Episode! We tackle the question we posed on Twitter, what are 5 of the top most influential movies ever? A tall ask, but we did manage to narrow it down from a long list of very influential films.

We had help deciding. Andrew from @Sci_Fictionary joined us on our 100th, and we went nose first into this discussion. From influences of a technical nature to ones more grounded in the way stories are told, we really picked apart some of our best choices and some great choices our followers submitted as well. Take note and see if you agree with our choices.

Plus, we've teamed up with Tee Public to say thank you to a couple of followers and listeners, so stay tuned in this episode to hear how you can qualify to win.

Enjoy this, our 100th episode and hear the wonderful voicemails we got from friends throughout the show. Thank you!

Battlestar Galactica, (1978) shares so much DNA with Star Wars, on this episode Ro talks with friend Nicholas Schaeffer about that shared DNA from visuals to special effects and more. The original series that ran one season in 1978 and was revived in the 80s as a cult classic generating fans from all over. We take a look at this influential television first, one of that era's most ambitious science fiction series and examine characters, actors and dive deep into why it's a favorite.

Part one is devoted to the first half of season one and I predict that we'll get fans on board to do a rewatch as we prep a part two. There is so much to talk about. Take a nostalgic trip and do your own search for the lost thirteenth tribe, a shiny planet, known as Earth.

That's the felgercarb!

Enjoy this retro episode taken from a LIVE show back in July 2020. We had some friends battle it out with Ro and Brad, talking about which follow up film to Star War is better, The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi.

This week marks the anniversary of the release of Return of the Jedi special edition and we went back to re-release this show in the pod catcher. You might hear some familiar voices...and that's the scuttlebutt!

Enjoy this fun and spirited battle royale, we certainly had fun discussing with friends!

We sit down and react to the newly released Kenobi trailer with friends Rob and Bravo of The Jedi Temple Archives Podcast and The Convergence Podcast. What did we like, what needs tweaking? Our thoughts on the series as a whole and what we're looking forward to from this new show.

We chat with the archivist himself, Rob of @JTAPodcast about the lore of the lightsaber, an elegant weapon, not as clumsy as a blaster. From the first time we laid eyes on the lightsaber, it has fascinated fans in a way no other fictional prop has. Join us as we discuss how this blade of light shaped the landscape of science fiction / fantasy.

We also take your questions. We got several great questions from you, our Twitter followers. We dive deep to try and answer them and discuss our thoughts on topics like, bleeding the crystal vs synthetic crystals from the Expanded Universe stories. Which did we feel fit the narrative better? Find out!
