Joel sits down with Dr. Eric Birgbauer, a professor of Winthrop University who does research on neuroscience specifically neurodevelopment, and his graduate assistant Jeffery Parham who is doing lab research on PRG which is involved in memory and learning. They talk about the landscape of research and teaching involved in the science department at Winthrop University and how it relates to the community. They discuss how they conduct their research and how it can be used to advance the treatment of neurological diseases while helping us better understand our genes and how they affect their development. Dr. Bigrbauer also explains how they edit genes of chicken embryos with CRISPR and how the ethics of this science affect the way they conduct research using this tool. Jeffery Parham explains the experience of working in research on the subject of his thesis and how it shapes the way he is understanding neurodevelopment and its relation to learning and memory.
