Publisher's Summary:
Rob Black is a college junior who, through a strange and debilitating series of events, has come to believe that he is a prophet. Rob is actually in the beginning stages of schizophrenia, a serious chronic illness that will, in time, begin to define who he is. In this account of his initial episode and descent into delusion, he will come face-to-face with what it means to, not only exist on the fringes of society, but to change the lives of others who exist there as well. Based on a true story.

Sobering window on mental illness
This book drew me in on page one and kept my attention until the last page. The author writes eloquently about an episode in his character, Rob's, life that, if it had happened to me, I would have trouble even remembering, let alone explaining in such detail. His story takes us across the country and back, as he sets about alternately doggedly pursuing his perceived 'mission' as a prophet and bringer of peace to the world, while questioning his loosening grip on his sanity. The writing is lean, and the book is fairly short, but it's written in such a way that allows the reader to become submerged in Rob's descent into mental illness, and his fear and confusion as he struggles with not only his own sanity, but with a world indifferent to his struggle. It's an indictment of not only our failing mental health care system, but our society's tendency to ignore that which we don't understand or find unpleasant. Mike Hedrick, the author, has lived with mental illness for years, lending an authentic voice to his character. Having experienced something similar myself, I instantly recognized the honesty of Mike's writing. I'll watch for more of his work in the future.
