Season 6. Year 3. We’re back.

And of course we’re kicking off in my favorite month… March. Women’s History Month. The month of queens, courage, and just enough chaos to keep us humble. And yes… Purim. Because nothing says “spiritual growth” like costumes, hidden miracles, and a plot twist.

This episode threads together something I can’t stop thinking about… the Japanese art of kintsugi… repairing broken pottery with lacquer and gold. The philosophy is simple and radical: don’t hide the cracks. Honor them. Let the seams shine! 

Which, frankly, feels very on brand for this moment in history… and for me. We talk about identity and integrity… about how antisemitism is part of a larger braided story that also includes Mizrahi and Sephardi displacement. Different shards. Same vessel. History isn’t neat. It’s fractured. But fractures don’t disqualify us from wholeness… they define how we rebuild.

Then we turn to Queen Esther. And here’s what I love most… she didn’t wake up brave. She built bravery. Slowly. Deliberately. A three-day fast. A gathered community. A sober reading of power. No theatrics… just disciplined courage. And the harder truth? Some decrees can’t be erased. They can only be countered. That reframes courage from a cinematic rush into something steadier… responsibility.

From there we get practical… because growth without application is just a cute quote on Instagram.

Alignment beats autopilot. Your time, your talent, your treasure… they should track with your values and the outcomes you actually want for your family, your city, your world. When old patterns crack… don’t panic. Break with intention. Rebuild with intention. Replace missing shards with gold, silver, platinum… better boundaries, clearer metrics, braver conversations, partnerships that widen the circle instead of shrinking it.

And we spotlight one of my favorite local examples of cultural kintsugi… the creatives, neighborhoods, and opportunity highlighted together into something stronger than what existed before. That’s what community repair looks like in real time.

This shared understanding points to a universal truth no matter the cultural or religious context, human beings have long recognized the power of unseen energies and the importance of maintaining spiritual balance for health, healing and enlightenment. So what determines the widely accepted from the woo-woo in the belief department, and that's what we're going to tackle today?

At the heart of this discussion is the idea that free will, faith, and self-love are keys to awakening and achieving one's highest potential. Nestled in the heart of downtown Jacksonville lies a park steeped in history and cultural significance. Originally established as a public square in the 19th century, the park has witnessed the evolution of the city and has served as a gathering place for generations. Throughout its history, the park has been a focal point for community engagement, reflecting the spirit of the city. 

Also, when you move to Jacksonville with kids, Sweet Pete's Candy Store is a must visit, and it's across the street. We went, we walked, my kids picked the nose for a picture. Truth be told, I think I picked the nose too, and we didn't imagine we would be back. But several years later, at a MOCA opening, I found myself asking, "where is the giant head in Hemming Park?" And that's what we're going to tackle today...

In recent years, revitalization efforts have breathed new life into the space, transforming it into a vibrant venue for arts, culture and public gatherings. Today, the park, formerly known as Hemming, is currently James Weldon Johnson Park, standing as a testament to Jacksonville's rich heritage and its commitment to inclusivity and celebration. The park pulses with a spirit of inclusivity and joy, drawing people from all walks of life, and at the helm of this dynamic space is Liz McCoy, the executive director of Friends of James Weldon Johnson Park.

Liz has a lifetime of experiences, from producing shows like Blue's Clues Live to navigating the challenges of New York City's bustling art scene, and now offers invaluable insights into career evolution and creative fulfillment. Her story takes a compelling turn in Jacksonville, where she found a new home and community that reinvigorated her passion for the arts. Transitioning from the familiar to the unknown can be daunting, especially  during our formative years. Whether faith and community were once at the center of our education, or it becomes a new space in which to find more ways to connect on a deeper lever, college campuses have often been at the heart of spiritual journeys. My first excursion away from my regularly scheduled programming of prayer was on a college campus, in fact, where words like "fellowship" meant where active seniors gathered, "pluralistic" meant a lot of us, and "micro-communities" was not in our vernacular. (Was it even in existence?) And they all somehow were what made me find my very diverse and inclusive people at something called Hillel.

In this episode, I schmooze with Leah Palestrant, the inspiring director of the Springboard Fellowship at Hillel International. From her impactful experiences with Teach for America to volunteering with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, Leah shares heartwarming stories of working with Special Olympics athletes, young adults and a society of global citizens that highlight the transformative power of exploring unexpected career paths and just saying yes to things that make her happy.

In this episode, we are also celebrating the diverse and inclusive world of Hillel International. At a time when Jew hatred globally, and on college campuses intentionally, are at the highest rate historically- how do micro-communities continue to thrive and cater to the unique backgrounds of Jewish students? Through a grassroots approach, Hillel empowers students to create spaces that resonate with their identities. We discuss the challenge of balancing Jewish identity and community engagement and the evolving role of leadership in meeting individual needs.

BIO | ARTIST STATEMENT

Elena Øhlander (b. 1988) is a visual artist and muralist working in the medium of mixed-media illustration, currently residing in Jacksonville, Florida. She obtained her BFA in Photography from The Art Institute of Jacksonville in 2014 and is actively pursuing her MFA in Painting + Drawing from the University of Florida. 

Her work explores identity, individuality, gender issues, societal gaze, and social justice. She utilizes a contrived scenario, characterization of her own likeness, intentional use of semiotics, and the psychology of color to build her vernacular. 

Her emphasis of hyphenated American identity is used as a comparative lens that focuses on Asian diaspora awareness and unification to society at large - investigating issues surrounding cultural preservation and historical memory.

After two years, and five seasons, I can finally say, let's follow up.

I share an intimate conversation with Colleen Rodriguez, Executive Director of the LJD Jewish Family and Community Services of Jacksonville- my first guest from my first episode. We tackle the topics we touched on then, that still trigger both of us today and reflect on the evolution of community support over the past 35 years, particularly focusing on where the greatest needs still require our attention- at the base of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Food, Shelter and Security.

Colleen shares alarming statistics, revealing that the MaxBlock Food Pantry had an unsettling surge from 170,000 to 239,000 meals annually, which signifies the harsh realities of food insecurity. We discuss how the organization has adapted its services to meet diverse needs—from the homeless to those living in temporary housing—by tailoring food offerings.

The conversation shifts to affordable housing challenges, emphasizing the struggles of working families. Colleen details the Eviction Diversion program where we meet hardworking individuals suddenly thrust into challenging situations. This episode sheds light on how in some cases, it would not matter if a vehicle repair is made or not- the cost could lead to an almost guaranteed life of homelessness that can't be recovered from.

We also touch on the importance of mental health resources, noting recent advancements in awareness and funding, yet acknowledging ongoing capacity issues. We emphasize the holistic, supportive environment at JFCS designed to break down barriers to mental health resources, ensuring that those in crisis find timely and compassionate help.

Overall, the episode underscores the interconnectedness of food security, housing, and mental health, and the crucial role of community support in addressing these challenges. You can't heal what you don't feel... and we are grateful that Colleen and her team feel strongly, react quickly and support avidly.
