* Dr Pradeep Taneja is professor of Chinese politics, political economy and international relations at the University of Melbourne. He is the co-author of China Since 1978 and co-editor of The European Union and China: Interests and Dilemmas.

* Daniel C. Lynch is Professor of Political Science and International Relations at City University of Hong Kong.
