Schooling System

Listen Later

Why do we have to memorise names and figures in class just to pass a test and knowing after that you won’t even have to use it to survive your everyday life?
In today’s episode of the Truth 4 The Youth Podcast, Garth slams on how crooked the traditional schooling system is. If we really value and prioritise the education of the students, then we must stray away from the set standards of the existing system. Let’s try to focus on what’s important – learning. It’s not the student’s problem because he is incapable, he has sickness, or he has learning disabilities. Teaching is a two-way thing. Educators should always ensure that their students learn, not just resort to the twisted grading system, and let a student completely fail. Discover more about what Garth has to say when you tune in.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
The traditional schooling system has instilled that standing out of the competition and having power results in success. It’s all about getting out and graduating on top of the class by acing your examinations and having active participation in class.
Many of us have been persuaded by this belief, and thus have affected our childhood experience and relationships. Instead of initiating a healthy, cooperative, and helpful environment for each student, they chose to teach children to be go-getters that are detached to their feeling, their relationships, and their environment.
The pass or fail grading system does not correctly give credit to students’ achievements, correct their mistakes, and assures that they know what they think they know. Educators should concentrate on giving them assessments on how they took the exam. Analyse what they got wrong, crosscheck with their other mistakes if you have to, and reteach them about it. Above all, we should always encourage them to learn.
Most of the tests given by teachers are things that you won’t ever be used on a practical daily life of an individual living in reality. There’s no need to memorise the date when a statue was erected, any mathematical formula, or the scientific name of a particular species.
BEST MOMENTS
“If I had learned what you said I was supposed to learn in the first place, then there’s no need to get near that[relearning].”
“Even if you pass… you passed what?”
