SciFi4Me: Live From the Bunker

Yes, it's May the Fourth. And you know what that means...

It means Disney's taken something that the fans made up for themselves and turned it into a marketing extravaganza!

Toys! Clothes! All sorts of crass merchandising? Or are they giving fans what they want?

And is it *really* STAR WARS Day?

It's awards season!

BAFTA, DGA, SAG, ACE, the Annies, the Oscars, ACM, VES, the Hugos, the Nebulas, the Saturns, the Dragons... there are a LOT of awards out there. And there are some people who would love to receive an award or two. It might make a difference in negotiating the next deal. It might interest potential investors or new clients.

But ultimately, do awards really mean anything to the general public?

We've seen plenty of discussion about how the STAR TREK universe gives us a glimpse of a type of utopian society. No money (except when there is), no hostiles between Earthlings (except when there is), no petty wars, no poverty, no wants. But how do we get there? Is this a universe based on the teachings of Karl Marx? Is Communism the way to get there?
