  • LIVE FROM THE BUNKER: Mandela Van Peebles Talks JIGSAW

LIVE FROM THE BUNKER takes a Halloween detour into SAW territory and a discussion with actor Mandela Van Peebles. Besides being a member of an illustrious Hollywood acting family, Mandela stars in JIGSAW, the eighth movie in the long running, intensely disturbing, and very profitable SAW franchise.

Besides his role as Mitch in JIGSAW, we have a chance to talk about working with his actor/director/writer father Mario Van Peebles, the intricacies involved in working on a horror movie, and his past and future projects in the entertainment industry.

  • LIVE FROM THE BUNKER: Interview with Grady Hendrix and Some PAPERBACKS FROM HELL

    Paperbacks From Hell
    Grady Hendrix
    Quirk Books, 256 pages
    978-1594749810

Set the wayback machine to the glory days of a more innocent time ... 1980's America. If your parents wouldn't let you rent that copy of Faces of Death from the corner 4-Star Video or the local 5-screen multiplex had no horror movies showing, there was still a way for a young horror fan to get their fix.

The branch library or the grocery store had, if not the perfect replacement for the latest Friday the 13th movie, an acceptable substitute to tide you over until you could get over to your friends house to watch a VHS copy of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I speak of the humble mass market paperback. From Ace and Avon  all the way to Zebra, American publishers flooded the land with lurid front covers and purple prose filled backs designed to separate you (or your parents) from your (or their) money.

Now this cheezy, pulpy, deliriously over the top era of horror history is chroncled in Paperbacks From Hell: The Twisted History of 70's & 80's Horror Fiction. Grady Hendrix, author of Horrorstor and My Best Friend's Exorcism and Will Errickson, host of the Too Much Horror Fiction blog present the hightlights, lowlights and unforgettable images of this "golden age" of publishing.

Hendrix was nice enough to connect through the magic of the interwebs to take a deep dive into a fascinating era for book lovers and horror fans. Besides a shout-out to the editors and artists who brought these covers to life, we remember our favorite cover cliches, what drew Hendrix to write a book about books, and some of the most spectacular covers featured in Paperbacks From Hell.

Listen in, and hope you enjoy!

  • LIVE FROM THE BUNKER: An Interview with Lois McMaster Bujold
The annual trip/vacation to CONvergence this year held a special opportunity for me. Sure, I would see friends, participate on panels, and buy cool stuff (as one does at these sorts of things), but I had also joined up with the gang here at SciFi4Me. It was time to prove my worth. So I thought, why not conduct an interview? With ACTUAL FAMOUS PEOPLE!?!

Skimming over the Guests of Honor on the CONvergence website, I discovered a VERY familiar name: Lois McMaster Bujold, multiple Hugo and Nebula Award winning author of, among other things, the Miles Vorkosigan titles from Baen Books. I’d certainly read a huge chunk of her work, but it had been a good long time ago. Maybe twenty years. Or more! Would I remember enough about them to not make myself look foolish in front of the world-renowned author?

    Probably not.

But I forged ahead anyway. When you reach for the sky, try to make it into orbit so you don’t end up falling right back down to Earth and injuring, or worse killing, yourself. Neil Armstrong always said that.

    I think.

    Maybe.

    Anyway, it worked for him.

The time arrived to rendezvous with Ms. Bujold. I was escorted, along with my trusty photographer Ann Laabs, by Jody Wurl, guest-wrangler extraordinaire. Ms. Bujold’s room was on the seventh floor of the North Tower of the Bloomington Doubletree. I explained to the author how, outside of job searching, this was my first interview with an Actual Famous Person. Ever! She was charming and put me at ease enough to ask what I hoped were interesting questions. She simply took those questions and ran with them.

After all, that’s what Neil Armstrong did.

    No, really!

  • LIVE FROM THE BUNKER: Donald F. Glut Talks ESB, Dinosaurs, and More
Donald F. Glut has had a long career as an author, screenwriter, filmmaker, and amateur paleontologist. Currently, he's working on his Tales of Frankenstein project. This extended interview opens up the rest of Glut's career, with insights into The Empire Strikes Back and his opinion of the Jurassic Park movies.

    On His Last Amateur Movie:

"As far as I know, that was the first amateur Spider-Man movie ever made. Possibly, people made them before me, but it's the only one I ever heard of, and there was somebody else who made one approximately the same time or shortly after. I was at a New York comic convention in 1973, and they ran his Spider-Man movie. And all I remember, Kraven the Hunter was the villain.

On Writing The Empire Strikes Back:

"That's one of three questions I hate answering, because I've answered it so many times, and it comes out -- you know the Abraham Lincoln robot at Disneyland? It says the same thing over and over... It was just a simple thing. They asked me to do it, and they made me an offer, and I did it."

"The ending kept changing, I don't know, on a weekly basis. And I knew what the ending was from the very get-go, but I couldn't write the ending. I had to write the fake pages. I had to write the ending based on the fake pages they kept giving me because they were so paranoid about anybody finding out the great revelation at the end, that they kept it a secret. It was not a pleasant experience."

    On Not Liking Star Wars:

"It sort of became this thing that everybody worships now, and it just never pushed the buttons on me. I saw in it a lot of cliches that I'd seen earlier, you know, in old movie serials and things. I thought the acting, with the exception of Peter Cushing and James Earl Jones, was pretty bad in that first movie. I thought the dialogue was pretty bad. Clunky."

    On Liking Jurassic Park:

"I love those movies. There's a lot of scientific inaccuracies in them, you know, which ... I have to sort of bite the bullet. I keep telling myself it's not a scientific educational documentary I'm watching. This is a monster movie. And I love Godzilla, and I love Ray Harryhausen films. But these are fantasy movies, these are science fiction movies, and once I get beyond that I think they're great."

  • LIVE FROM THE BUNKER: Unlocking Recursor.TV with E.J. Kavounas
In this day and age of segmented audiences, some perceive a benefit to drilling down to a very narrow niche in programming. E.J. Kavounas, Edouard de Lachomette, and Steve Tao have developed a new web site that does just that: Recursor.TV — a site for "hard science fiction" that concentrates on indie fare. With the flagship web series Nina_Unlocked in place, the site is set to deliver original short films, web series, and news content on what they call an "immersive platform".

Co-founder Kavounas called in to discuss the site, plans for the future, and how Nina will unlock further potential for Recursor.

  • LIVE FROM THE BUNKER: Peadar O'Guilin on THE CALL - November 8, 2016
I sat down in The Bunker and with the magic of the internet talked to Peadar O' Guilin, author of THE CALL. I enjoyed the book so much I couldn't resist an opportunity to talk to O' Guilin again. I interviewed him at Worldcon here in Kansas City. That was just before THE CALL was released. He was excited about its release but none of us had read it. Without knowing anything about the book my questions had to be more general.
Now I've read it, reviewed the book and I had more questions. Which is why I reached out to talk to him again. Maybe you have some of the same questions.
Find out more about Peadar O'Guilin, THE CALL and a couple of teasers on the sequel that should be released winter 2017.
