This week on the ScotsinUs, we bring to you "The Scots Who Founded the United States", a talk with Historian and Architect John Kinnear. This is the latest installment of our Scots Who Built New York legacy Project, and orginally took place live on May 13th, 2026 at the Arsenal. Thirteen signers of the Declaration of Independence were Scots or of Scottish Descent.We will explore the influences of Scots and Scottish Events which since the eleventh century inspired our Founding Fathers to create a democratic form of government.Scotland’s history has been a struggle for independence for centuries. These events and the Scottish Enlightenment led to an understanding of what “Government by the People” should be. We will meet these Scots and witness their contributions to the founding of our country.

The discussion will focus on the historical events surrounding Mary Stuart's turbulent reign, her relationship with Queen Elizabeth I, and the final days she spent in Scotland before fleeing across the border into England. Manson’s research often highlights the regional history of Southwest Scotland, particularly the communities and castles Mary passed through on her final journey in May 1568.
