Today’s guest is Mike Samson, Senior Director of Development for Franchise Fast Lane, Development for Everline Coatings and a franchisee with All Dry.
Franchise Fast Lane has become a leader in the FSO (Financial Sales Outsource) industry by helping companies that want to get into offering franchises.
Everline Coatings is the largest line striping and parking lot maintenance company in North America with over 231 territories.
Mike began his career with Best Buy where he worked and climbed the ranks for 16 years. Then after a few stops, he made his way to become brand director at Franchise Fast Lane.
When asked about the changes from one industry(retail) to another(franchising), Mike says it was both excitement and fear, but one platform prepared him for the other. “I am living proof everything you learned at Corporate America will apply in that franchise when you run it. One huge difference, Mike says, is that working in Corporate America can limit your ability to create wealth. “You are only going to have so many stock options and can only build your 401K so big, but when you own your own business NOW you can really create wealth.”
When asked about what traits he sees in individuals coming into franchising, Mike says he sees mostly executive-level people, usually VPs in marketing or senior management. He also sees retail people, plus franchisees of other brands. For Everline Coatings, he sees people that grew up using their hands for labor and are now “white collar” in their careers. They find they can still create wealth while being able to get their hands dirty.
As for advice to potential franchisees, Mike says to study the corporate location. “You will learn all the things they did well and all the things they struggled with. And then I ask myself? How repeatable is that?”
