18 TO PARTY MOVIE REVIEW

Despite its title, “18 To Party” is not a teen sex comedy, does not feature 18 year olds, and does not depict any actual partying. Instead, we get a slice of life drama about a bunch of middle schoolers hanging out behind a punk rock club. It’s 1985, Ronald Reagan is president, the high school is experiencing record numbers of teen suicides, nobody knows where their kids are because all the parents are at a town hall meeting about UFO sightings (no, really) but all these kids care about is getting onto the club’s wait-list. While the film maintains a light touch, eventually the conversation turns to darker themes: anxiety, peer pressure, negligent parents, suicide, and drug abuse. What unfolds is a talky drama about disaffected teens stuck in the twilight period between adolescence and early adulthood. Harmoni is a mermaid-haired, millennial, rum drinking, Section 31, Slytherin (who’s divorced J.K.
