AFTER YANG MOVIE REVIEW
This weekend, in theaters, while The Batman offers us all a Colin Farrell as a bloated, scarred-faced Penguin fleeing the Dark Knight in an explosive car chase, After Yang gives us Colin Farrell where he shines brightest: in an indie drama from A24. And sure, A24 often means beautifully filmed, brooding, arthouse, horror pieces that require you to Google “Ending Explained”, so you can talk about them with friends and sound like you knew what was going on the entire time, but not all of their productions leave viewers suffering from existential dread and questioning our place in the universe, wondering what life truly means. Sometimes they give us beautifully filmed and acted arthouse dramas that fill your heart… and leave you in an existential dread questioning your place in the universe, wondering what life truly means, and Beau, Ryan, Bradly, and T.C. are here for it with this gentle sci-fi flick set in a not-too-distant future where techno-sapien companions exist as walking, talking, free-thinking family members. When his young daughter’s beloved companion – an android named Yang – malfunctions, Jake (Colin Farrell) searches for a way to repair him. In the process, Jake discovers the life that has been passing in front of him, reconnecting with his wife (Jodie Turner-Smith) and daughter across a distance he didn’t know was there. The Squad is left with many deep thoughts and feelings, as well as wondering how much nicer we should all be to our Siris, Alexas, and smartphones. I, for one, welcome our forthcoming robot overlords.
