AN AMERICAN PICKLE MOVIE REVIEW
If you like Seth Rogan, you’re in luck because “An American Pickle” gives you more Seth Rogan (and more pickling salt) than is probably safe to consume in a single sitting. Herschel and Sarah Greenbaum (Seth Rogan and Sarah Snook) are Eastern European Jews who immigrated to America to make a better life for their children. In a freak workplace accident, Herschel gets sealed in a vat of pickles and the brine perfectly preserves him for a hundred years. After waking up in 2019, Herschel is saddened to learn that the world he knew and the woman he loved are gone. He cheers up though when he learns he has a great-grandson living in Brooklyn, a schlubby app developer named Ben Greenbaum (Seth Rogan, again).
Ben delights in showing Herschel the wonders of the modern world, such as Alexa and iPads (“A magic rectangle. You make this?”). The intergenerational meet cute comes to an end when Herschel’s stubborn pride costs Ben his chance to sell the app he spent five years working on. For his part, Herschel is disappointed that his only living descendent does not share his traditional values or Jewish faith. And the problems only escalate from there. “An American Pickle” has some good laughs, and a strong dual performance from Rogan, but our critics had mixed feelings about it. Nathan, Max, Adrian, and Marco take a break from pickling their own livers to debate the merits of the film while attempting to squeeze in as many pickle related puns as they can.
