GEORGETOWN MOVIE REVIEW

Oscar winning actor Christoph Waltz both directs and stars in this “based on a true story” tale of a con artist accused of murdering his much older wife. When the charming Ulrich Mott (Waltz) marries elderly widow and socialite Elsa Brecht (Vanessa Redgrave) it raises a few eyebrows but only Elsa’s daughter Amanda (Annette Bening) suspects Ulrich of ulterior motives. With Elsa’s encouragement, Ulrich uses her political contacts to launch a sketchy consulting firm. Before long, he’s rubbing elbows with Washington’s political elite, and hosting dinner parties at Elsa’s house in the affluent neighborhood of Georgetown. To their guests, Ulrich and Elsa appear to be a charming if unorthodox power couple but secretly the marriage is falling apart due to Ulrich’s double life and scheming ways. When Elsa is found dead at the bottom of the stairs, Ulrich becomes the prime suspect. Ulrich’s shadowy past and his never-ending string of lies confounds and irritates everyone from Amanda, the police, and even his own attorneys who struggle to defend a man who seems pathologically incapable of telling the truth.
