HYPNOTIC MOVIE REVIEW

Sexy suspense thrillers are the bread and butter of networks like Lifetime. But even with some of that sweet Netflix money and talent from the Mike Flanagan acting troupe, are there any surprises to be had in a type of movie that does exactly what you think it’s going to do from the moment it starts? It’s one of those films where you see an actor hit the screen, and without a hearing a single line of dialogue, you know, “Um yeah, that’s the bad guy.” Can a movie that follows what feels like a checklist elevate itself beyond the others? Or is a “straight to streaming” thriller no better than the rest? That’s what Melina, Lewayne, and T.C. have decided to discuss in their review of the new Netflix feature. Kate Siegel (“The Haunting of Hill House”) plays Jenn, a young woman seeking self-improvement after a tough few years of fighting off depression. She enlists the help of a renowned hypnotherapist, Dr. Colin Meade (Jason O’Mara). But after a handful of intense sessions, Jenn discovers unexpected and deadly consequences that lead her on a cat and mouse chase, along with Dulé Hill as Detective Wade Rollins, a cop with a cold case he is determined to solve. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise.
