I WANT YOU BACK MOVIE REVIEW
The basic plot of any romantic comedy is that two characters meet, part ways due to an argument or other obstacle, then ultimately realize their love for one another and reunite. Perhaps with some comic friction or awkwardness, they declare their love for each other and the film ends on a happy note. You know the formula. We’ve seen it a thousand times. Rom-coms have been around for ages. Even Shakespeare played in the genre with A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado About Nothing. This is a familiar and often done genre, so when a special one comes along that isn’t just hokey-tropey imitative fare, it’s something to sit back and enjoy, which is exactly what Ben, Jordan, Melina, and T.C. did with I Want You Back. In this tangled comedic web of love and misunderstanding, Peter (Charlie Day) and Emma (Jenny Slate) were total strangers, but when they meet, one thing instantly bonds them: they were both unexpectedly dumped by their respective partners, Anne (Gina Rodriguez) and Noah (Scott Eastwood), on the same weekend. As the saying goes, “misery loves company,” but their commiseration turns into a mission when they see on social media that their exes have happily moved on to new romances, Anne with Logan (Manny Jacinto) and Noah with Ginny (Clark Backo). Terrified that, in their 30s, they have lost their shot at happily ever after and horrified at the prospect of having to start over, Peter and Emma hatch a desperate plot to win the loves of their lives back. Each will do whatever it takes to put an end to their exes’ new relationships and send them running back to their arms. The Squad laughed, lamented, smiled, and spent more time talking about Scott Eastwood than they expected.
