MANDIBLES MOVIE REVIEW

In the crazy world of films by writer/director Quentin Dupieux (“Deerskin”, “Keep an Eye Out”), almost anything goes. His absurd and often surreal comedies set up some pretty odd premises and his latest is no exception. Two not terribly bright thieves on a mission to deliver a mysterious suitcase, end up getting sidetracked when they find in the trunk of the car they’ve stolen a GIGANTIC house fly. They hatch a plan to train the fly to retrieve items for them and then they can commit big heists using it. Which, I guess, is the first thing one thinks of when you discover a giant fly in the back of a stolen car. And then…other things happen. Dupieux films aren’t for everybody but they really are for us on this review at least. Chris, Robert, and Dupieux cherry-popped daddy Brad talk about the pleasures of his movies and this one in particular.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, in 1992 Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas, where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. If it weren’t for sad music and scary stories I wouldn’t be as well-adjusted and cheerful as I am today. Moonlighting as a musician off and on since adolescence, I am as big a fan of scores and needle drops as I am of slow zooms, production design, and third act exposition. Just about all of my screen time is spent on international horror, drama, and hour long episodic. Big fan of genre, and the biggest fan of supernatural horror and dark sci-fi with meaningful representation and narratives that use trauma, grief, and grace as more than surface-level content. Also, I read a ton of modern horror novels/comics and stan Matt Berry.
