PREY MOVIE REVIEW
In 1987, cinema was gifted with the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, Predator, the story of a muscle-bound group of mercenaries who headed to South America and ended up dying one by one at the hands of an extraterrestrial hunter. It was a lightning in a bottle movie that to this day remains one of the greatest action movies ever made. And since then, we’ve been offered several sequels of varying degrees of quality and success. Predator 2 saw the space slayer fighting some cops and gangs in 1990. A classic in its own right, impressive in its own ways. In 2004, the director of the Resident Evil movies gave us one fighting some Xenomorphs in Antarctica fulfilling a prop maker’s Easter Egg to, well, less than stellar reviews. And then the space killer landed in a small Colorado town in 2007 to fight more Xenomorphs. And that, um, sure was a movie. A few years later, in 2010, Robert Rodriguez got involved and gave us a Predators jungle planet. Okay, that was cool. Back to some basics, but it tanked at the box office. And finally, Shane Black gave us The Predator in 2018, with >ahem< arguably the most realistic predator to date. So, yeah, it’s been a rocky road for anyone to travel since that undeniable 1987 original legend. But here we are again. Another Predator movie. This one comes courtesy of Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane). This time, the hunter has landed in 1719 America where Naru (Amber Midthunder), a skilled Comanche warrior, protects her tribe from the highly evolved alien predator that hunts humans for sport. She must fight against the wilderness, dangerous French colonizers, and this mysterious creature in order to keep her people safe and prove her worth as a warrior. Sarah Jane, Chad, Neil, and T.C. spend this entire review explaining why this movie kicks so much ass. There may even be a debate if it is in fact not just the true successor to the original, but its superior.
