STAR TREK – LOWER DECKS SEASON TWO SERIES REVIEW

I get that a lot of the new Trek shows don’t really appeal to some of the fans of the older shows as they have a VERY different feel, aren’t episodic, and can be a little overly…edgy. But the one show that ANYONE who digs on TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise really, REALLY should be watching right now is “Lower Decks”. Yes, I know it’s animated. Yes, I know it’s a 30 minute comedy series. But it was MADE for the fans of the original stuff. AND (somehow) it’s canon, taking place five years after the end of the Dominion War (“Deep Space Nine”). References abound to all the other shows and films and these not bridge crew characters, who often go unappreciated but a LOT of the time end up saving the ship, are wonderful. Season two continues the storylines from the first season, evolves its characters, adds a Tamarian to the crew (“Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra” if that sentence reminds you of the TNG episode), and in general ups the comedy and animation quality. To put it short, we kinda loved it. Listen to Chris, Harmoni, Elliot, and Marco go over some of the highest points and try to convince you that this alone is worth getting Paramount Plus for.

Christopher Lawrence Cox (Founder, Da Boss)

Born in the wilds of northern Virginia, Chris managed to put all of his survival skills to use and barely escaped with his life to Austin Texas in 1992 where ever since he’s dabbled in everything from plumber’s assistant to sandwich maker, from band to bar management. An opportunity to see theatrical release films for free by becoming a critic on a local public access show called “The Reel Deal” turned into a full-time job when Chris and his friends decided to take it to the internet. They built the site Spill.com, adding multiple podcasts and animated features, to no small amount of success. During this time, a fortuitous friendship sprung up between Chris and young Brian Salisbury, who was also a local film critic, and they merged their forces of will, and their laundry list of ideas for shows, to eventually build this community of critics. While Brian eventually followed his heart to a new family, Chris continues on with a cast of colorful folks from all over the country (and a few others).
