SUPERDEEP MOVIE REVIEW
It’s the early 80s and the Soviet Union is on the verge of collapse. A female Russian scientist with a history of ethically dubious methods is coerced by the Soviet military into visiting a remote facility to study a mysterious contagion, which the military naturally wants to weaponize. No, we’re not talking about last year’s excellent Russian horror film “Sputnik”, but a different Russian horror movie that shares some of the same tropes and themes but that’s where the similarities end. “Superdeep” stars Milena Radulovic as Anya, an epidemiologist assigned to investigate the goings on at the Kola Superdeep Borehole. The facility is shut down and the hole has been permanently sealed off; could that be because of a hideous threat that has lain dormant for millions of years, held in check only by the thick layer of permafrost that surrounds the tunnel? Maybe. Anya and the Colonial Marines, erm, I meant Anya and some soldiers of the Soviet Army will have to go 12 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface to learn why “man is the warmest place to hide”. It’s possible this reminded us more than just a bit of some other well-known films and even video games. Does “Superdeep” have any depth or is it just a shallow rip-off of stuff you already know and love? Listen to Lewayne, Matt, Tessa and Marco as they try to get to the bottom of this unoriginal, occasionally good, but often frustrating film.

Lewayne White (Screener Squad)
Lewayne’s earliest memories are of watching movies and reading comics, which instilled in him a sense of wonder, a vivid imagination, and unrealistic expectations. It also means he spends a lot of time watching movies, writing scripts for them, and trying to get them made. He lives in the middle of middle America after landing there as a child, and has remained there mainly because he hates packing.

Matt Foster (Screener Squad)
Matt Foster is a stand up comic, podcaster, and movie critic currently living in the greater Salt Lake City area. His lifelong love of genre film began early, when he realized they freaked out his mom. He performs (epidemics permitting) regularly on Dungeons and Comedy, a DND live play with standup comedians, and is the slightly less mustache-y half of the Nighthawks Podcast, a cinema-centric discussion cohosted by Trevor T. Trujillo.

Tessa Morrison (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad, Unstabletop Gamers)
Well-rounded nerd and artist, Tessa Morrison grew up in the misty mountains of West Virginia and was constantly ridiculed for being a “weirdo.” Then moved to Austin in 2009 where people said the same thing, but in an endearing tone. Tessa works an office day job, creates puppets and fiber art, cosplays, models for gaming and animation studios, and volunteers for various organizations. One of which is the Other Worlds Film Festival, Austin’s first SciFi film fest, working in the capacity of Outreach Director and programmer. Another is local DIY-comedy-wrestling league,
