THE BIRTHDAY CAKE MOVIE REVIEW

T.C. “the Mouth”, Adrian “el Critico”, and Chad “the Mohawk” of The Screener Squad Mafia crime family gather to break bread over a discussion of the American crime thriller “The Birthday Cake”. On the 10th anniversary of his father’s mysterious death, Gio (played by Shiloh Fernandez), a quiet, young guy reluctantly embroiled in the modern New York mob life, makes his way across Brooklyn to bring a birthday cake prepared by his mother to a memorial celebration hosted by his Uncle Angelo, a Mafia crime boss (played by Val Kilmer). Along his way, Gio crosses paths with one person after another who is equally connected to his very vicious and dangerous life. He soon begins to piece together what really happened to his dad all those years ago, coming face-to-face with the kind of violence he’s been trying to avoid his whole life.

Though born and raised in Chicago, this film critic is Mexican to the bone. Adrian has been watching movies since he was a child, many of which might not have been age appropriate. Still, he couldn’t get enough. All throughout his life, friends and family would look to him for his recommendations and reviews on whatever films had come their way. Inspired earlier in life by the likes of Ebert and Roper at The Movies and then later Spill.com, Adrian decided film criticism and analysis provided a great outlet to further his love of film. He began to craft his reviews and thoughts on film in ways he thought would be accessible to devout film hounds as well as the casual viewer. Mixing in jokes, entertaining observations and robust critical analysis, Adrian El Critico may be new to OneOfUs, but he is already making a name for himself on our site.
