THE MAURITANIAN MOVIE REVIEW

Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster) and Teri Duncan (Shailene Woodley) are lawyers who take the case of Guantanamo Bay detainee (on spec), Mohamedou Ould Stahi (Tahar Rahim). For those folks out there who’ve had their ears plugged going LALALALALALALALA for a decade or so, prisoners in this Cuban stationed military facility were held without charges being pressed, were extensively tortured in ways that the Geneva convention specifically forbids, and Mohamedou in particular was stuck like this for FOURTEEN YEARS. Nancy and Teri aren’t even sure that he’s actually innocent of the charges of being the recruiter for Al Qaeda during 9/11 but they are sure that the situation he’s been in damn sure isn’t what America is about, regardless of the need for vengeance. Their opposition is headed by Lt. Colonel Stuart Couch (Benedict Cumberbatch) and even he smells something foul in the air. But does this new drama play out as Oscar bait or as a genuinely moving work of art? Chris, Jena, Frank, and Jordan are here to press these charges.
