THE SUICIDE SQUAD MOVIE REVIEW

James Gunn slides on over to pick up the reigns at DC with this second “Suicide Squad” film and the anticipation level, for those of us who dig Gunn’s whole thing, loved his “Guardians of the Galaxy” films AND his pre-big budget crazier fare, was sky high. His version of the dark side of the DC world, where the person who runs the down and dirty side of things (Viola Davis), using imprisoned villains with explosives inserted into their heads to make sure they stay on mission, ended up being pretty much what we thought it was going to be: a glorious grand guignol of extreme violence, surreal and sometimes kind of meta humor, and a smorgasbord of bizarre characters. Leading the pack again is Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) leading the team on a mission to sneak into a fictional tyrannical island nation and destroy a mysterious and possibly world-destructing secret called Project Starfish. On this particular ride is Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Bloodshot (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), King Shark (Sean Gunn/Sylvester Stallone), Ratcatcher II (Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), and many, many more, although take your bets now on who makes it through this in one piece. I first got hooked on movies when I saw Star Wars at a drive-in theater as a kid. Growing up in a small, rural town meant not having access to a lot of movies. In college, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough. I love it all — flicks, films, movies, and cinema. I still have that wide-eyed wonder of that kid watching movies from the back of a pick-up truck at the drive-in.
