VIOLET MOVIE REVIEW

There are some lucky unicorns out there who never hear a voice in their head telling them what a piece of shit they are, but for the rest of us out there just trying to do our best in this crazy world, we hear a steady, booming chorus of self doubt and fear reminding us of our flaws and never letting us forget our insecurities. And this is exactly what the title character of Justine Bateman’s (“Family Ties”) directorial debut faces. Olivia Munn plays Violet, a film executive in Los Angeles who realizes that the guiding voice inside her head (Justin Theroux) has been lying to her about everything, but the tables turn when she learns to trust her heart and pursue the things she wants in life, rather than letting fear dictate her every moment. Jennifer, Frank, Dogget, and T.C. decide to let the voices in their own heads speak and discuss if this arthouse indie flick manages to succeed in telling a story about trauma.

T.C. De Witt is a multi-awarded writer/director originally from Wisconsin and now based in Los Angeles. His life has been devoted to the arts since he was a child. Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive.
