WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY MOVIE REVIEW

It appears that Hollywood’s appetite for the musical biopic is truly insatiable. We’ve seen many a superstar receive the rise-and-fall biopic treatment, starting from their humble beginnings through their meteoric ascension, their drug-addled nosedive and eventually their triumphant return to the spotlight. It’s a tale as old as time…one might say to the point of parody. And what better way to lovingly send up the oft-repeated tropes of the biopic than to tell the “life story” of perhaps the greatest musical parodist of all-time: Weird Al Yankovic. The perfectly-titled Weird: The Al Yankovic Story stars Daniel Radcliffe, Evan Rachel Wood, Rainn Wilson and a confetti explosion of cameos…seriously, you have no idea. Directed and cowritten by Eric Appel (alongside Yankovic himself), the film takes what was originally a Funny or Die skit and expands it into a nearly two-hour feature that only grows more absurd and ridiculous with each passing minute. In the twenty-some years that followed, Melina continued to grow into her geek identity through the discovery of Batman, Mst3k, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Mandalorian. But perhaps her most significant discovery came at the age of fourteen when a night of YouTube mining led her to the review site of Spill.com. Melina became a devoted follower whose fandom did not end with the site’s demise.
