Paul Newman gives perhaps his greatest performance as boozing, ambulance-chasing attorney Frank Galvin, who tries to reclaim his soul by winning a malpractice case against a huge Catholic hospital, represented by a prestigious law firm. James Mason is deliciously evil as the rival attorney; Jack Ward is Frank's faithful pal and Charlotte Rampling is the mysterious woman who witnesses Frank's crisis.
