Nick Viland is a second-year student majoring in News and Information in the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism who is focusing on sports broadcasting. Nick explains how he landed a summer job doing play-by-play for a college league baseball team in Alaska—an experience that brought him face-to-face with a bear and her cubs.

Luke Steiner majors in News and Information in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. He works as a Scripps College Student Ambassador and is significantly involved in sports broadcasting with ESPN3. In addition to describing his experiences in classes and on campus, Luke explained how he has carefully planned his courses to attain his major in News and Information, a minor in sports management, and a specialization in sports production and sports administration, all while graduating a year early.

Dan Dry is an accomplished commercial photographer and alumnus of our program. He was a native Athenian and attended Ohio University in the mid-1970s. Following his time at OU, Dan joined the Louisville (Ky) Carrier Journal staff that won a Pulitzer Prize. Dan’s career has resulted in over 100 books, over 400 awards, and the distinction of being Director of the Kentucky Derby photo team. In this podcast, Dan discusses his time at OU, his career as a photographer, and important trends that he is observing in the industry.

Over Veteran’s day weekend, the Scripps College will host the 2019 Visual Discovery Conference, which was created by an international consortium of universities to discuss teaching and learning within the field of data visualization and infographics. The first such conference was held in Venice Italy in 2018. This episode features several students and faculty who attended the Venice conference. They reflect on their experiences traveling internationally, attending the conference, and what to expect at this Year’s Visual Discovery Conference in Athens.
