Lenny Bruce was born Leonard Alfred Schneider on October 13, 1925, in Mineola, New York. Raised during the Great Depression, Bruce grew up in a turbulent family environment after his parents divorced when he was young.
His mother, a stage performer, often brought him into the world of entertainment. Watching performers and comedians backstage introduced Bruce to the power of performance early in life.
Although he struggled in school and never showed much interest in formal education, Bruce was fascinated by people, social behavior, and the contradictions of everyday life.
Those observations would later become the foundation of his comedy.
Bruce served in the United States Navy during World War II. After leaving the military, he pursued a career in entertainment, initially trying his hand at stage acting and nightclub performances.
It would not take long for him to discover that comedy was where he truly belonged.
