  • I Peter, Part 6
    • I Peter 3:15-4:6
    • I Peter 3:15-16 – Tell people how to live godly lives and show them by your example. Together, those two things may bring some to follow Christ.
    • I Peter 3:18-20 – Some take the view that this is saying that Jesus descended to Hell to preach to the spirits there. However, this does not harmonize with other scriptures.
      • II Peter 2:5 – Noah described as a preacher of righteousness.
      • Isaiah 61:1-2 – Jesus quotes this in Luke 4 and applies it to Himself. The prison is the prison of sin.
      • Ephesians 4:8 – Jesus led a host of captives.
      • Conclusion: Jesus in the spirit spoke through Noah to the sinful people while the ark was being built.
      • I Peter 3:21 – The reason for mentioning Noah in I Peter 3:18-20 was to make the connection of salvation and water to baptism.
      • I Peter 4:3 – This verse directly condemns social drinking as it condemns both drunkenness and drinking parties.
      • I Peter 4:5 – When Jesus comes again, He will judge both those who are still alive when He comes and those who have already died.

          • Read the text!
          • Read the context
            • This is a letter written by Paul to the church in Corinth.
            • The context doesn’t mention money directly. Paul refers to their giving as a “bountiful gift” or “a service.”

                      • If you sow much, you will reap much, so give cheerfully. Some churches use this passage to compel their members to give more, which is against this passage!
                      • Conclusion and application
                        • I must be cheerful and happy to give whatever I can. I must not begrudge my responsibility and be happy in whatever way I can help my brethren.

                          • Acts 10:4 – Cornelius evidently had a right relationship with God. How was that so? Because he lived righteously under God’s law at the time.
                          • Romans 1:26-32 – These were not acceptable to God because they did not respect God’s law. These were all things Cornelius did not do. He respected God’s law.
                          • If Cornelius was already acceptable to God, why did he need Peter to come teach him?
                            • The same question would apply to God-fearing Jews of the time.
                            • Acts 1:8
                            • Hebrews 13:10
                            • It was a question of God’s timetable. Jews and Gentiles of that time had to hear and respond to the gospel to continue to be acceptable to God. Rejected the gospel would have meant they were no longer in a right relationship with God.

                                              • I Peter 3:1-2 – Peter was just discussing submission before governments and masters. He continues the discussion with instruction for wives to be submissive to their husbands (Ephesians 5:22). This does not mean that women have a lesser role at all. Wives should live so that if their husbands are not Christians, their husbands will be won over by their good example (Matthew 5:16).
                                              • I Peter 3:3-4 – This is not an injunction against braiding hair and putting on jewelry. The inner person is much more important than the outward appearance of a person.

                                                • “as with someone weaker” – husbands are to treat their wives as though they are weaker vessels. Treat them kindly and gently. This doesn’t necessarily mean the wife is in fact weaker.
                                                • I Peter 3:12 – Compare John 9:30-31.
                                                • I Peter 3:15 – Set Christ apart in your heart. If you do this, you will be able to give a defense for your faith.

                                                                            4. I Peter 2:24 – In what sense did Jesus bear our sins? See Leviticus 16:14-22. Just as the scapegoat bore the sins of the people, Jesus bore our sins on the cross. The difference is that Jesus needed only to bear our sins once for all time. The scapegoat ceremony had to be completed yearly. Compare Hebrews 10:1-10.
