                • From these passages we learn, continued:
                  • When one church sent funds to another church, the funds were delivered to the elders of the church where the need was (Acts 11:27-30).
                  • Each sending church selected its own messengers (I Corinthians 16:3; II Corinthians 8:23); no sponsoring church was used in sending the alms.
                  • The extent of this help from one church to another was until there was freedom from want. (II Corinthians 8:14)
                  • The local church administered relief unto its own needy members within its own framework, no outside organization was built and maintained to administer this relief. No church sent its own needy to another church or to a benevolent society for the administering of relief (Acts 11:27-30; Romans 15:25).
                  • As a result of this, thanksgiving went up to God and He was glorified (II Corinthians 9:12) and Jewish brethren in Jerusalem longed for their Gentile brethren (II Corinthians 9:14).
                  • Thus, the local church is authorized to use its funds for benevolence under only two conditions:
                    • When a local church has destitute members.
                    • When another local church has more destitute members than it can relieve.

                                      • Luke 1:26-38 – Jesus’ birth is foretold. Notice that Mary gladly accepted her role and was up to the task. We need to have the same good attitude when we have an opportunity to serve God.
                                      • Luke 1:39-45 – Mary visits Elizabeth.
                                      • Luke 1:46-56 – Mary rejoices. Often called the Magnificat.
                                      • Luke 1:57-66 – John the Baptist is born.
                                      • Luke 1:67-80 – Zacharias prophesies about John and his work preparing the way for Jesus.
                                        • Luke 1:80 – Compare Luke 2:40.
                                        • Luke 1:37 – The Bible is filled with many events considered to be impossible. Isn’t it wonderful to serve a God with whom nothing is impossible?
                                        • Luke 2:1-6 – Joseph and Mary to go Bethlehem to be taxed by the Roman Empire. Jesus would be a king, but His parents were humble, average people that had to travel long distances to pay taxes just like everybody else!
                                        • Luke 2:7 – Jesus is born!
                                        • Luke 2:8-14 – The angel appears to the shepherd to announce the birth of Jesus.
                                          • Luke 2:11 – The angel specifically refers to Jesus as the Christ.

                                              • Lesson 5:
                                                • Introduction
                                                  • In this lesson we emphasize the importance of understanding and respecting New Testament instructions relative to the functions of a local church.
                                                  • Worship

                                                              • The benevolent work of the church is the fruit of Christianity, not to produce it (Romans 15:27)
                                                              • Saints were the objects of church benevolence (said seven times in above passages)
                                                              • The basis of this relief to saints was NEED (II Corinthians 8:13-14)
                                                              • When one church had more needy members than it could relieve, other churches sent alms to enable it to care for its own needy (I Corinthians 16:1-3; II Corinthians 8, 9)

                                                                            • Neither Luke nor Acts names Luke as the author, but all early records unanimously understood him to be the author.
