      • Forgiveness:  From God to Me and Others
        • I John 1:9
        • “Forgive” and “forgiveness” in the New Testament: leave, abandon, release. Matthew 27:50; 4:20,22; I Corinthians 7:11 all use the same word.

          • II Chronicles 33:5-6, 9, 12-13 – God turned to help Manasseh even though he had been so evil in the past.

            • We must learn and obey the gospel. Romans 1:15-16
            • We must confess our faith. Romans 10:9-10
            • We must repent and be baptized. Acts 2:38
            • After baptism, we must continue to be faithful, repenting and praying for forgiveness when we sin. Acts 8:22

              • Acts 7:59-60; Luke 23:34, 43; II Peter 3:9 – Steven and Jesus prayed with a view to future repentance, but they show we should always have an attitude of forgiveness.
              • Matthew 6:12-15; 18:21-35 – If you are having trouble forgiving, it might be because you have forgotten how much forgiveness you have received.

                • Hebrews 9:27-10:21
                • Hebrews 9:27 – How did Jesus bear the sins of many? See II Corinthians 5:21. Jesus bore the sacrifice for our sins to the altar.
                • Hebrews 10:1 – The old law was only a shadow of the good things to come.
                • Hebrews 10:3-4 – Under the old law, the people were charged with their old sins again each year. The sacrifice of bulls and goats was not sufficient to fully atone for their sins. It was only Christ’s death that finally took away the sins in God’s eyes. See Ephesians 1:3-4.
                • Hebrews 10:9-10 – In the old days, the custom was to take written laws that had been canceled and nail them up in a public place. This is the sense in which Jesus nailed the old law to the cross.

                  • Titus 2:15 – We should also be able to teach the gospel with confidence. Authority comes from God and His Word. We should have confidence in our beliefs because of our study of the Bible.
                  • Titus 3:4-7 – Both God the Father and Jesus had a part in the plan of salvation. See also I Timothy 1:1 and Titus 2:13. God can be called “Savior” and Jesus can be called “God.”

                  • If We Walk in the Light
                    • I John 1:7
                    • Each word in the above is very significant:
                      • “If”: two possibilities, to walk or not to walk
                      • “We”: personal, too important for me to miss it
                      • “Walk”: continuous action, keep on walking
                      • “In”: in connection with
                      • “The”: definite article, only light in which can walk
                      • “Light”: truth, make God’s Word our light
                      • Blessings for walking in the light
                        • Blood keeps on cleansing
                        • Keep on having fellowship with God
                        • The blessings are not automatic. God has never bestowed blessings without response.
                          • Luke 17:10 – When one meets his responsibilities, he has not earned salvation.
                          • Romans 6:23 – It is still be grace.
                          • Wrong views of walking in the light
                            • Some say:
                              • It is just believe and love; doctrine and practice do not make a difference.
                              • It is to feel in our hearts we are right.
                              • It is to never sin.
                              • It is to be able to specifically recognize, confess, and pray about every sin, even those done ignorantly.
                              • The truth
                                • Psalm 19:12-13 – Secret vs presumptuous sins
                                • Walking in the light in this context
                                  • Sometimes we sin (I John 1:8,10)
                                  • Keep on confessing (I John 1:9)
                                  • Keep on keeping His commands (I John 2:3-5)
                                  • Walk as He walked (I John 2:6)

                                    • The one who slips has not stopped walking in the light, but the one who stops confessing, obeying, and praying is not walking in the light.
                                    • The one who walks in the light:
                                      • Has been baptized into Christ
                                      • Is making Jesus the lord of his life
                                      • Specifically confesses and prays about sins of which he is cognizant
                                      • Prays like David in case he has sinned unknowingly.
                                      • Security:

                                                                    • Is it a Sin to Sing a Song Addressed to Jesus?
                                                                      • Some have concluded it is a sin to so sing based on two premises:
                                                                        • They have concluded that it is a sin to pray to Jesus.
                                                                        • They have concluded that a song is a prayer set to music.
                                                                        • Both premises are wrong.
                                                                        • Jesus is worship worthy.
                                                                        • Praying and singing are worship.
                                                                        • Therefore, it is right to pray to Him and address worship to Him.
                                                                        • There is scriptural authority to address a prayer to Jesus.
                                                                          • Satan did – Acts 7:59
                                                                          • Paul did – II Corinthians 12:7-10
                                                                          • John did – Revelation 22:20
                                                                          • John wrote to uninspired people and told them they could pray to Jesus – I John 5:11-14
                                                                          • Rational beings in Heaven very praise to Jesus
                                                                            • The four and twenty elders – Revelation 5:9
                                                                            • Those who had victory over beast – Revelation 15:3
                                                                            • Singing is a distinct act from praying
                                                                              • One is a prayer and the other is a song.
                                                                              • The Bible nowhere equates them.
                                                                              • They are inconsistent
                                                                                • They will sing “Praise Him! Praise Him!” telling others to praise Him. Then they refuse to sing songs that praise Him.
