Arguments often given in defense of instrumental music:
Ephesians 5:19
You members of the church of Christ expect everyone to agree with your opinions!
No one has a right to bind their opinions on others. Matthew 15:7-9
I Peter 4:11- We are to speak as the oracles of God.
You members of the church of Christ just pick and choose what you like just like everyone else!
Nadab and Abihu were punished for worshiping incorrectly.
You members of the church of Christ just don’t like instrumental music!
It’s not a matter of not liking it - many of us do like it and know how to play instruments.
I just find instrumental music to be uplifting.
It’s not about being uplifted - it’s about being edified. Ephesians 4:11-16
Instrumental music was allowed under the old law!
Yes, but we are under the new law now. Colossians 2:14
The old law is an example to us, but it does not guide our worship in this age.
If we try to follow the old law, we have to follow the whole law.
Many of us have pianos in our homes, why can’t we have one here?
Why don’t we have pool tables or big screen TVs in the church building? Not everything in the home belongs in the worship service.

Psalms 119:89- God tells us plainly what we need to know.
Matthew 28:18- Jesus has all authority.
Ephesians 5:17

I Peter 4:11
Why do we wear clothes? Because God commanded us to.
Why do we marry for life? Because God commanded us to. Genesis 2:24
Why do we keep ourselves only for our mate? Because God commanded us to. Hebrews 13:4
Why do we not murder people? Because God commanded it. I Peter 4:15
Why do we not steal? Because God commanded it.
What about creation and evolution?
Evolution is the default position of the world.
The Bible gives us everything we need to know. Genesis 1:1-5
If you follow a purely evolutionary line of reasoning, can you say that abortion, genocide, or racism is wrong?
What about abortion? Abortion is murder and therefore prohibited by God. Romans 13:9
Romans 1:28-32- The descent into sin started by people not acknowledging God.
What about women preachers, elders, and deacons?
I Timothy 2:11-15- God does not permit women in these roles.
I Timothy 3:1-7- We are careful about who we select as elders also.

The corss of discipleship is desire.

Acts 8:30-39- Philip teaches the eunuch. The eunuch wanted to be baptized.

Romans 5:6-13- how and why God sent His Son to save us
The cross of discipleship requires us to give and not take.
Luke 14:26-33- We must be prepared to give all for Jesus.
Philippians 2:1-8- We should not operate out of selfishness.

Examples:
Do examples authorize? Yes.
Do examples bind? No.
Do examples exclude? No.
Examples illustrate a right way to do a thing, but they are not binding and exclusive.
Jesus said, “go.” (Matthew 28:18
Paul went by ship, a right way to go.
But not binding nor exclusive.
Jesus said, “teach.”
Paul taught privately (Acts 2.
This is a right way, but it is not exclusive.
The example itself is not binding, but the command of Galatians 6:10, and like passages, do make it binding that we teach privately.
Congregational benevolence:
Examples: Acts 2:44-45
Statement: Romans 15:25-26
Command: I Corinthians 16:1-3
A local church is not authorized to relieve non-saints by way of command, statement, example, nor necessary inference.
But the examples do not exclude local church relief of non-saints.
If another passage authorized local church relief of non-saints, it would be right.
Local church relief of non-saints is wrong because no passage in the Word of God authorizes it, not because the examples exclude it!
