  • 45. A discussion on tank valves, the Ocean-based Climate Solution Act of 2020 and Dick Anderson – a pioneer in scuba diving
Tank valves are sometimes taken for granted. Although seemingly simple there are a number of parts deep inside you valve that will deteriorate over time. Tank valves should be periodically overhauled. One recommendation is that you can have it overhauled every five years when you are having your tanks hydrostatic test. Listen for some details about the parts inside the valve and how they work together.
The Ocean-based Climate Solutions Act of 2020 was introduced to congress on October 20, 2020 by Congressman Raul Grijalva who chairs the House Natural Resource Committee. The Ocean Conservancy calls this the first comprehensive US bill on ocean-climate solutions actions. HR 8632 calls for protecting and promoting blue carbon, expand marine protected areas and develop massive offshore renewable energy. As Congressman Grijalva states "A healthy ocean is key to fighting the climate crisis"
Richard E. Anderson was a pioneer of scuba diving in the United States. He started his career in diving by working for Rene Bussoz at US Divers in the early 1950s. He also worked with Paul Arnold and Bill Arpin on the DIVAIR regulator before working with Disney on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. He graduated from E. R. Cross commercial diving school. Dick joined Healthways in 1956 where his innovation in single-hose regulators set the stage for all modern regulators. Dick Anderson was a support diver for Hannes Kellers 1000 foot dive. He also took Lloyd Bridges from Sea Hunt on a dive to 120 feet. Diver Dick also worked on Jaws the Revenge and Baywatch.

  • 44. A discussion on decompression theory, Diving Against Debris, and Your Next Dive takes you to Cayman Brac
Decompression theory is the study and modeling of how inert gas gets from our lungs to our body and then how it is released from our body. All decompression models have evolved from the work by John Scott Haldane. Haldane introduced the concept of tissue compartments that take on nitrogen at different rates called half-times. This work was done in the early 1900s. In the mid-1960s, Dr. Robert Workman developed m-values or absolute inert gas pressure that a tissue compartment can take without presenting symptoms of decompression sickness. Half-times and m-values are used to develop the algorithms in your dive tables or dive computer.
The PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty course is a fun and rewarding course. In this course you will learn about marine debris, where it comes from and what we can do about it. You also learn how to conduct and record a dive against debris survey. Once you conduct your dive and pull out the trash from underwater you follow the five survey steps - weigh, sort, record, dispose and report. It is a great way to dive with a purpose and make every dive a dive against debris
The Cayman Brac Beach Resort is located on the western end of Cayman Brac close to the airport and is part of the Clearly Cayman Dive Resort collective owned by the Tibbets family. The resort has 40 rooms that were completely rebuilt by 2015. The all-inclusive meal plan is outstanding. Reef Divers operates 4 Newton dive boats. There are approximately 70 named dive sites. Many of the sites are on the western end of the island making for short boat rides. You normally get to do a two dive excursion to Little Cayman's Bloody Bay Wall. You will also get to dive the signature wreck on Cayman Brac - the MV Captain Keith Tibbets.

  • 43. PADI Rescue Diver, Chasing Coral and Sea Hunt – It’s Still Alive goes Cave Diving
The PADI Rescue Diver course is an extremely challenging and rewarding evolution. Our course consisted of knowledge development - done through a thorough and comprehensive electronic learning, a review of that material through a virtual meeting, an intense pool session to demonstrate and practice rescue exercises and the open water practical scenario. The class also introduced teamwork among the rescue divers to fully handle an emergency. There are 10 rescue exercises and 2 rescue scenarios in the PADI Rescue Diver course that provided the confidence needed should something go wrong.
Chasing Coral premiered in July 2017 and won the People's Choice Award for best documentary at the Sundance Film Festival as well as the 2018 Emmy for Outstanding Nature Documentary. The documentary was conceived by Richard Vevers, current CEO of The Ocean Agency and produced by Jeff Orlowski who runs Exposure Labs. It took three years to shoot over 500 hours of incredible underwater footage. Thirty countries contributed to the documentary and there were more than 500 volunteers involved. This film documents the peril that corals face due to climate change that results in coral bleaching. The documentary is about 90 minutes long and can be streamed on Netflix.
Cave Diving is from season 2 of Sea Hunt and it premiered on May 24, 1959. In this episode Mike is working with a geologist - George Bryan who is trying to find uranium in an underwater cave. While trying to find the uranium and underwater landslide traps George in the cave. Mike goes back to the surface, calls for help and out comes a boat with George's wife Suzie ready to dive and assist. They try to use hooks to pull the rock away but it fails. In the commotion Suzie's hose gets fouled and they need to buddy breath to the surface. Now Mike and the captain Pops concoct a plan to use a fish to thread a line around a rock. It works (really!)

  • 42. Regulator Pressure Discussion, Learn about the Coral Restoration Foundation, and another pioneer of the underwater world – Ed Link
Regulator pressure is a critical component of your regulator maintenance. Every year you should have your regulator's pressures checked and adjusted whether you are having an inspection or overhaul. The intermediate pressure (IP) of the first stage should be within manufacturer specification which is normally between 125 and 150 PSI. If you have an unbalanced first stage, the intermediate pressure should be checked for high and low tank pressure. A balanced first stage should have a consistent intermediate pressure for a full or low tank. For the second stage, a magnahelic gage is used for measuring the cracking pressure. Cracking pressure is the minimal amount of inhalation effort required to begin airflow. This measurement is in inches of water versus pounds per square inches. This fine tuned adjustment is extremely important to avoid free flow or difficulty breathing.
The Coral Restoration Foundation was founded by Ken Nedimyer in 2007. Ken at the time was a commercial fish collector and live rock farmer who noticed staghorn coral starting to grow on his underwater farm. Ken saw the potential of replanting coral. Over the years the Coral Restoration Foundation has grow. They invented Coral Trees for use in the nurseries. Their nursery off of Tavernier, FL covers 1.5 acres. They return tens of thousands corals back into the wild every year. Coral Restoration Foundation in partnership with NOAA and others are involved in Mission Iconic Reefs where they plan to restore 7 reef sites in FL comprising 93,000 square meters. Coral Restoration Foundation is committed to survival of this critical ecosystem.
Ed Link was born in 1904 and as a young man he had a passion for flying. As an inventor, he developed the Link Trainer for training pilots. His trainer was used to train half a million airmen during World War II. By 1951, Link developed a new passion - for scuba diving. His new passion was for underwater archeology and research. He wanted to dive deeper, longer and more securely. In the early 1960s, Ed developed a project in concert with the National Geographic Society called Man-in-Sea. By 1964, Ed's project progressed to complete a dive in a small habitat that went down to 432 feet where two divers stayed for 49 hours. Ed Link also created a mini-submarine called Deep Diver that took two divers down to 700 feet. He then created another underwater vehicle called Johnson-Sea-Link. Tragedy - the loss of his son in 1973 turned Ed Link's attention to a rescue vehicle called the Cabled Observation and Rescue Device (CORD). Ed Link died in 1981.
