A collaboration of one. A struggling musician and MIT grad working at Polaroid builds a studio in his spare time, then invites his singing buddy over to lay down some vocals and a couple drummers to come in and lay down some drum grooves. What you get is one of the best albums in rock and one with arguably the strangest beginning.
