Domenico Modugno once sang 'I believe that a dream like this will never return.' But in Polignano a Mare, his hometown in Italy, just over thirty years ago, that event was anything but a dream. It was a true nightmare. It all unfolded just a few hundred meters from the square that now stands a life-size statue of the famous singer, arms outstretched, as he did when he sang 'Nel blu dipinto di blu'.
It was indeed a tragedy. But then, it took an unexpected turn when a man refused to accept what everyone else took for granted and took a bold step that no one else before him had dared to attempt. Unbelievable? Reality doesn't need to be plausible.
