Although Romans was written to the Romans to help them comprehend justification (the act of being found 'not guilty') by faith, the letter is the first complete oratory on the plan of God after Jesus was risen and ascended into glory. It explains the plight of humanity - that every person is languishing in an unresolved conflict with God caused by sin and the ​resulting separation and death ​c​aused by ​the carnal nature. In this session we take you on a survey of the entire epistle before we begin the task of studying the book line upon line.

The book of Job confronts one of the most difficult realities of the Christian life, the suffering of the righteous. Romans 11 affirms God's unwavering faithfulness to His promises to Israel, refuting both replacement theology and the notion of Israel's permanent rejection. The chapter establishes that God has not cast away His people, as evidenced by the existence of a remnant chosen by grace, not works, and preserved throughout history—even in times of national apostasy. Israel's temporary blindness and stumbling, resulting from unbelief, were not final but served a divine purpose: to bring salvation to the Gentiles and provoke Israel to jealousy, ultimately leading to their future restoration. The chapter distinguishes between three groups—Jews, Gentiles, and the Church—emphasizing that the Church did not replace Israel, nor does it share Israel's national destiny; rather, the Church is a temporary outgrowth of God's redemptive plan, while Israel remains the object of future covenantal fulfillment. The ultimate hope is the national salvation of Israel at Christ's return, when 'all Israel shall be saved,' confirming that God's gifts and calling are irrevocable and His wisdom, judgments, and ways are unsearchable.

An Overview of Romans Chapters 9–11 After eight chapters detailing the universal problem of sin and the glorious, individual salvation found by faith in Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul makes a significant shift in his discourse. Romans chapters 9, 10, and 11 form a distinct section addressing the national destiny of Israel in light of God's work in the Church. A failure to recognize this change in subject, from the individual to the nation, has led to much confusion and false doctrine. These three chapters answer the critical question: Has God's Word to Israel failed? The central theme is God's unwavering faithfulness to His promises. This section of scripture is written to explain what God is doing, why He is doing it, and what He will do in the future concerning the nation of Israel, the Gentiles, and His Church.

An overview of Romans 9 brings us to verse 22-24 and the challenge to the obstinate heart. Who are to to say to the one who has formed you? Consider God's sovereignty before your Salvation.

With Romans 1:16-17, we continue our survey of Bible books. The book of Romans contains the most systematic display of the gospel and its benefits to the believer.
